Cook County Board Race Endorsement(s)

The Chicago Tribune endorsed Forrest Claypool over current Cook County Board President John Stroger in the Democratic primary to face Anthony Peraica in the general election.

Claypool and Peraica have aggressively gone after the culture of corruption during Stroger's tenure. Not surprisingly, Stroger is endorsed by Chicago's corruption czar, Mayor Dick Daley.

We think it's a no-brainer to endorse the two reform candidates, Claypool and Peraica, to set-up positive change regardless of what happens in November. However, Claypool has an interesting challenge if he is able to beat Stroger. Claypool used to be Daley's Chief of Staff and it's clear Daley doesn't have the same loyalty he expects from others. So, if Claypool wants to be credible, he will need to speak out about the culture of corruption in Chicago, not just Cook County.

And, if Claypool loses to Stroger, both he and Mike Quigley, who was also thinking to run for President, but moved aside in the Democrat primary, need to prove they are serious about reform and support Peraica, even though he is a Republican.

Stroger is probably a nice guy, but he represents a generation of political nonsense and "that's the way its done" mentality that must be shattered. He's got a new hospital named after him and he deserves respect, but it's time to move forward.

So, we hereby endorse FORREST CLAYPOOL in the Democratic primary for Cook County Board President IF he agees to speak up against Daley's corruption if he wins and support ANTHONY PERAICA if he loses. We think partisan politics should be secondary to rooting out corruption and stopping the exploitation of taxpayers. What happens in Cook County affects ALL of us, from our taxes to the culture of how government operates.
