Weisner Wants to Kill Drive-In Theater

It's obvious Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner has way too much free time when he's not rewarding cronies with your taxdollars or raising taxes to pay for it. He's apparently supporting an idea to kill the Hi-Lite 30 Drive-In Theater on Montgomery Road and instead thinks another strip center would be good.

We have plenty of strip centers, but we don't have many drive-in theaters. The operator of this theater wants to make several improvements. If it's a quality place with 21st century conveniences and aesthetics, combined with a growing market that includes Aurora, Naperville, Montgomery and Oswego, this is one of those opportunities to bring people here instead of sending them elsewhere. In case you haven't noticed, Aurora has lost out to other its neighbors for movie theaters (Tinseltown in North Aurora for example).

3rd Ward Alderman Stephanie Kifowit favors cultural development in her area. We think there are plenty of other places for Weisner to reward strip center cronies. Instead of trying to demolish the drive-in, maybe Weisner should focus on the demolition of the old Copley Hospital.

This matter will be before the Planning and Development Committee on Thursday, April 27th at 4pm on the 5th Floor of City Hall. Keep the drive-in, keep out Weisner.

Didn't Weisner sell hotdogs at the concession stand? It rubbed off on his personality cuz he's the biggest wiennie of them all.

As we sit, Squirm is working feverishly to bring a strip club to that prime location, that is what TOMMY WANTS, ISN'T IT?

See this is the economic development that is ramped all across Aurora. Build strip malls everywhere. They just got done overhauling Phillips park, now lets put a straggly strip mall across the street. Where is Kifowit (the self-proclaimed) preservationist? This has got to be more important than the Sears houses. But wait its controversial so they all hide their heads in the sand. Can someone call Rick Lawerence so at least one of these smucks will take a stand.

I love the Hi-Lite!
There are so many empty storefronts in many strip malls in Aurora and Naperville. We don't need new malls - we need to keep the theater!

It would be nice to work with the owners to create a real attractive Drive-in. One that would bring more families to the area for a night out with their kids.
Of course Sherman would actually have to return a phone call (which would be a major accomplishment by itself). When I asked if AEDC was working on this property I received an e-mail for M. Kelly of AEDC stating unless the city was to aquire the property, AEDC would not be involved. I'm glad that the taxpayers have so much money that we can support these people.
If we get a shopping center there a guess we have to pay all the tenants to move there and refund the taxes to the developer. That economic development at it's best.

This should show just how clueless the weinnie man is...

I believe he should defer to his ward alderman in cases like this.

When the hotel vote came up at council in Whittey's ward Tommy Boy cast the tie vote to bring in something the people of that ward didn't want. A great leader or even a good one would have deferred to the ward alderman's position.

Don't get me wrong I am all for a "good" hotel at the 'right' location over on orchard. But that is just it. It is the wrong hotel wrong local and Tommy wants quick fixes that screw the city long term.

It was him and all his, incompitent cronies and backers who created this mess we live in called Aurora. I think he could at least learn some patients for longterm solutions.

What a bozo!

Can you clarify for me? Is Stephanie in favor of keeping the theater?

Is Aurora beyond the point of no return?

I believe and have always believed that the Drive In is a wonderful draw for Aurora. The reason why this is up for Council consideration is because of discussions between Bigelow and myself for the best way to save the drive in. This dedication agreement, if approved, will allow the drive in to continue. If not approved, the drive in will be demolished. I would like to thank everyone for their support for the drive in.

I definitely agree with this Alderman Kifowit, Alderman Lawrence, this blog and anyone else who thinks the drive-in should stay. Drive-in theaters are rare these days because of how various developers want to use land for other reasons. I see no advantage to a strip mall, but I see a BIG advantage to making it attractive, aesthetic and family-friendly. I live in Naperville and will visit this theater.

On a sidenote, this blog, Rick Klau's blog and OneMan's blog are among the best in the blogosphere!

Maybe the owners of the Hi-Lite didn't give enough to the United Way ( ? )

looks like kifowit may be taking her head out of the sand.

Maybe Weisner is letting the free market work. God forbid!

If he spent city money on it, you would probably criticize him too.

Get of your playa hatred.

Brent, if you get a job and get elected, then start criticizing.

Do we have another candidate for mayor? Who is this Brent dude? Rick Lawrence already has another opponent? The line is already forming for the next election in three years. This is going to be one heck of an election.

Who are the weisner supporters out there. Can any of you please identify yourselves.

Weisner should never have been a department head, let alone mayor.

Hello ,

I am from new delhi , india . We have a drive-in in mumbai , but not a
single one in new delhi .

To search for a drive-in in my city of which I might not be knowing , I
spent some time in surfing over the net for a drive-in in my city .

Although , I did not find any drive-ins's located in new delhi . but I
sure did find a new approach for drive-ins's about which i read at
www.mobmov.org .

They are already present in the usa , canada and australia . Other
upcoming venues are in germany , brazil , indonesia and other places .

I have written to them showing my desire for starting a delhi chapter
and they have response was very encouraging .

The best part about them is they are free and they inform us about the
shows held every fortnight .

Hope you all enjoy the experince , as I am waiting to start my own
drive-in chapter .

Happy mobbing .
