Dedicated to the local fishwrap (1:59)
Ever wonder what happens to the OpenlineBlog interns when hearing the local fishwrap in Aurora is upset with us for challenging them?
Click the video to get an idea...

Great dance, you have cause to celebrate. You are providing a valuable service. Thank You
Not only Openline has great writing, deals with big issues, gets rallies going, media attention, but it's all with a fantastic sense of humor.
The fishwrap staff should admit you guys are turning this town around.
That is really cool!
I also love the launch video.
She's cute :)
How Dumb! What was the point of that? This blog will never get much attention with all your conspiracy theories!
Look at 12:34, someone from the fishwrap jealous?
12:34 Andre is that you?
Conspiracy Theories? Tom OB must be getting to close for comfort for you to start calling them conspiracy theorist!
I see more journalistic integrity in this blogs articles than in 10 years worth of articles form the TP(fishwrap).
To annon 7/14 @ 12:34 PM
This blog has got many of us to do things that you are not aware of. You had better worry about the conspiracy on your part! You are going to get what you deserve!!!!
I'm glad your inbred collection of a few dozen readers enjoys self-congratulations. Now try to reach 25,000 people on a daily basis and, maybe, this blog will really matter.
Yeah, everyone is out to get you. Everyone is in Weisner's pocket. The whole world against you. Like my mom used to say, 160,000 people can't all be wrong.
9:41
Since when did 160,000 People vote Tom IN?
And when has the TP ever had 25,000 Readers on a daily basis?
As for 160,000 all being wrong you ever hear of Castro, Hitler, Stalin, Musolini? Shall I go on?
Cry, Pout, Cry, It real pisses you off that an Anonymous group of bloggers with No financial backing is doing what you can't. At the same time holding you accountable as well as the adminstration and making you 'try' to finally do your JOB!
All of this and a growing movement that is helping the people finally get their say and making change for the better.
I love it the more mad you get and post on hear the more the folks at the openline blog know that it is working.
The mayor would not have banished it from all city computers, assigned members of his staff and his reelection campagn to monitor it numerous times daily if it wan't having an effect and making a difference.
You just have a serious case of sour grapes.
Go get em Openline!!! You ROCK!
To annon 7/14 @ 9:41PM
There were 1,942 signatures to save the Drive-In and 62 letters to the Mayor. Also to other ones such as Linda Chapa LaVia. This was all due to 2 Aldermen and this blog. Also help from The River 95.9FM. Don't you realize that this response is probably better than on election day? No everyone is not out to get us, just the Mayor and certain others. They only reach the ones who they know will help in their endevors. Who in the world contacted 160,000 people in Aurora. Certainly not you or the Mayor, etc. 160,000 people did not vote in the election for Mayor last year. This blog has reached many people and I appauld them for it. Guess what, not worried about anyone trying to get the blog readers, but you had better worry about the blog readers and openlineblog that is going to get you and yours!
To 9:41pm, do you work for the fishwrap? What's the matter, can't you identify yourself?
Wasn't the local fishwrap part of a big fraud with circulation numbers along with the Sun-Times News Group?
How come the REAL circulation keeps shrinking with a population boom?
I think the fishwrap is insanely jealous this blog has more credibility, MUCH better writing and creativity and I'm willing to bet will have more people who read it than the fishwrap!
Roughly 17,000 people came out for the Mayor's race and voted. Weisner got about 62% of the vote, that is roughly 10,000 people who voted him in. This bog mobilized & helped get 2,000 signatures. If those 2,000 people don't vote for him the next race, he will lose!! That is the power in Aurora. The voters are reading this blog, and even if it's only a few thousand, they are enough to sway an election.
The minority of the population 10,000 people out of 160,000 people voted this guy in, and now everyone is suffering.
9:41 must be Buy Crap because they don't know the facts and is just plain stupid. Buy Crap go get more false teeth or maybe plugs next time.
I like the music for the dance. What's the name of the tune?
It's Mambo music. I really like it.
The average viewer of this blog is much more likely to vote than the average reader of the fishwrap.
I think it's reasonable to say this blog will have a much bigger impact on any local election even IF the fishwrap was an actual newspaper doing things well.
I don't know if the fishwrap ever corrected their paid circulation numbers that turned out to be a fraud with the Sun-Times News Group, but they've had something like a 100 years to build their readership, there's been a population explosion the last 10 years and yet their readership is dwindling.
I think we should all call the fishwrap's OpenLine telephone number and point out things missing from their stories and say you can find the full information at OpenlineBlog.com.
I've subscribed to the fishwrap for several years, yet I agree 100% they have failed and this blog has done an incredible job of dealing with issues, awesome writing and brilliant creativity. I don't think there's any competition. This blog may be a rookie, but they get the MVP.
I clicked on the poll on grading the fishwrap's coverage and that tells us 63% give an "F" to the fishwrap. 78% say they've done a mostly bad or poor job. SEVENTY-EIGHT PERCENT!
To 12:34pm, this blog already matters.
It's caused historic rallies against city hall and exposed cronyism and corruption (yes, corruption).
It has got Weisner's administration doing cartwheels to come up with new tricks now that it isn't enough to control the fishwrap.
I've seen various stories from the fishwrap that are a direct result of this blog's efforts.
Chatham Grove happened partly because of this blog. The Rush-Copley folk don't want to look foolish on this blog like they can afford to do in the fishwrap.
People are asking seriuos questions to school districts like D131 and because of the pressure from this blog and the actions of residents, there is the first hope reform has a chance.
In a short time, this blog and the people who participate here, including the 2 genuine aldermen, have done more than the fishwrap, mayor and many high-paid officials combined.
I agree with a comment the other day. Give this blog a Pulitzer for their writing, give them a Profile in Courage Award for impacting democracy itself and give them some high-tech award for the best use of technology to make the biggest impact on real people and real issues in our society.
Keep up the good work openline and I hope to see all posting here at the school board meeting Mon.
There is a lot of work that must go into this blog while the fishwrap has a ton of staff and resources. Just imagine if had the same resources.
Thanks Openline!
Just like all the bloggers and mobile phone crowd was going to swing the last presidential election for Kerry. Didn't happen, not even in Florida. Keep on with your mutual exchanges and support while you can.
And one other comment for 7/14 at 11;05 p.m., are my tax dollars supposed to go toward allowing you to use your city computer (which is really mine) to blog on while you are at work?
By golly, this blog is going to change the core destiny of this city.
Ok, while some of the issues you stand for are honorable and your activism may or may not be "revolutionizing" Aurora like you brag, I must admit, all this "we're so great...the fishwrap sucks...yay us!" amounts to nothing more than a glorified circle jerk. If you wanted to be more professional, try laying off the small cocked ego trip.
Fox out
Sounds pretty foxy to me, fox. I agree that much of the 'tude that comes throguh here just needs to be given up and put on the compost heap.
By golly, this blog will become bronzed in history due to the way we can criticize the local newspaper.
WOW! I didn't realize the TP had so many employees who actually knew how to read.
If you guys spent more time doing your job instead of bitching at the local bars about this blog you might have half the following they have.
After all it is your JOB your get paid to do it (poorly) if you don't like it or this Blog quit or start your own blog.
Loosers whine, Winners do something about it.
Personally, I do not see the Beacon and the Blog being anywhere on the same level. The Beacon is a paper that consistantly spins the news, while I believe the Bloggers are truely reporting the news. When people make remarks that are untrue in the Beacon, no one is aware and there is little or no recourse other than a comment to my wife, "Hey, that's just not true."
But when a Blogger states an untruth (like the one who said Rick Lawrence was going to "cut and run" and Lawrence responded by pointing out he had just purchased another house in Aurora for a relative) it certainly puts the "uneducated comment" in its place.
Of course I still lost respect for Lawrence as a businessman. Doesn't he know he'll be paying higher taxes in Aurora? He should have bought in NApervilee.
The public pays for their TP with their hard-earned money. Businesses pay for the right to advertise in it. Pretty hard for some of you in here to understand, but it appears that many things are.
By golly, if I were to assemble a time capsule today with the most prominent replicas from Aurora 2006, the bashing opinions on this blog would be right at the top.
Bashing translated means truth!
Do you want to hear more about spping the news?
I learned a great lesson this week while reading the Beacon News (Chapa Lavia Speaks on Hispanic Issues). The lesson: Don’t trust reporters from the Beacon to tell the real story. I sat in disbelief as my State Representative explained, in plain English, her reason for not supporting driver licenses for undocumented immigrants in 2004. While the Beacon reported Lavia said ‘she did not know her community’ what she actually said was much different. Chapa Lavia stated (to the largely Hispanic audience) “I needed the votes from the West Side of Aurora and I listened to the white people.” That was her answer in person, not exactly the answer this paper provided. She continued to pander to the audience by stating that she desperately needs their votes this November because “even the Democrats in Chicago would love to see me fall flat on my face”. What the Beacon reported was far different from the desperate pandering I saw that evening. She lost my vote, even is she intends to flip her vote on this issue in the Fall.
The fishwrap's coverage of Linda Chapa has been very soft and I find it odd the closest thing they can do to question her on issues is to report other people questioning her.
Where was the fishwrap all this time asking her about these things? Why didn't the fishwrap report on her flip-flop votes? If she has a good reason, let her give it, but from what I can see, the fishwrap has gone out of its way to "protect" her.
Don't get me wrong, I actually like Linda as a person, but her continued support of Weisner's irresponsible actions and failure to speak out means I will not vote for her and instead vote for Bob Mitchell.
By golly, this blog will go down in history for exposing all of those gaping deficiencies in the policies and successes of Linda Chapa LaVia, who just happens to be unbeatable at this juncture in her career. And, righfully so.
4:49 PM If she is unbeatable, why is she so worried?
Bagging for votes does not give the idea of confidence.
Yeh, right, 7:23 p.m. We'll see what time it is after the campaign gets out of the garage.
This so called "uncreditable" news source sure does get alot more reaction to it stories then the Beacon. Keep going Openline you are doing a great job.
To the editors of the Beacon, you have an obligation to your share holders to compete. It looks to me your not doing a very good job at that. Pretty soon your advertisors might start to question your plan.
Which is a good question how can a paper who out for strictly profit critize a free Blog whose only motive seems to point out inconsistencys that you some how over look.
Lot of blogs have advertising, but it's rare to have a subscription fee. I would love to see Openline have advertising here. I have a business and I would much rather pay here than the Beacon. Advertising in newspapers is not very cost-effective. With a blog like this, you hit a higly tuned-in and much more sophisticated audience then the typical newspaper reader.
I agree, this blog provides more accurate info. A perfect example is Linda Chapa-LaVia.
I heard she was pretty desperate asking for the vote last week on a Latino forum, she even promised the Latino audience she will vote for Driver Licenses for illegal aliens next time. And she said she supported the Aurora marchs for legalization of illegal aliens, but she just couldn’t attend because she was in session.
Instead taking a stand for voting against driver licenses for illegal aliens last time, she blamed the West side whites because she was afraid they will not re-elect her for being Latino. She promised she will do it next time comes to a vote, but the latinos need to go out and vote for her.
The Beacon reported a softer version.
I'm not quite sure how this headline turned into Chapa LaVia bashing but........ I don't understand how we can be voting based on nationality still in 2006. Our officials should be chosen because of their opinions and beliefs and not the color of their skin. The same goes for the officials. You represent the majority not your nationality. You are a representative of the United States and your district, not the country your family originated from or your largest financial supporter. Your votes will come from doing a good job. This blog blasts Weisner all the time for the contribution from Bigelow so how is Chapa LaVia any different when she accepts votes stating one issue and then votes in favor of issues for people that are not legal voters? Wrong is wrong no matter who is involved.
By golly, I am again convinced that this blog is destined for its place in history where several dozen wizards can negativitate their way to long-lasting matterness through self congratulatory bashing of those front and center.
I'd love to see advertising here also. Keep on dreaming............
I'm just curious.
This seems to all be fairly critical of the Mayor, and I'm just wondering if you all have a 'short list' of people you prefer to run the next time around.
It's never too early to get someone's name out there....
To bad many of the bloggers are not and can not even vote in an Aurora election!
Anyone ever think of that?
Does anyone know the deal is in for the fishwrap to push Pat Perez for Sheriff? They are trumping up 8 year charges on some person whose dead son walked out of his car with a club. Williams arrests the guy and now Steve "Lord" is all over Williams.
How about the association of Perez with gang members and his bankruptcy in Lodi, CA? The "wrap" will never touch that. The election fix is in...
Williams had the gall to run against the GOP establishment. Now he is paying for it courtesy of the Kane County media and the "wrap."
Williams has had sex offender direct notification, using retinal scans to identify felons and initiatives involving gang technology.
Did anyone read about it? Guess not. Because it was never reported in Aurora or if it was it was buried somewhere.
Buried..they have Williams 100 feet under...
