Fleecing of Aurora and Exploitation of Students | East Aurora School District 131 and Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner

There is a rally on Sunday for the East Aurora Tax Hike to support tax increases, bloated administration costs, continued incompetence, financial mismanagment and collusion with city officials and cronies.

Since voters overwhelmingly rejected this previously and we emphatically urge everyone to vote against the referendum, why are we encouraging people to attend the rally at Faith & Family Church on Indian Trail at 1:30pm Sunday?

We want the public to witness how the district is exploiting students as part of their campaign tactics, even having football players dressed in their uniforms. We also want the public to see Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner's collusion with them to increase taxes. Most importantly, we want them to see the public does not approve of their tactics or this referendum.

We strongly believe it is foolish to provide more money to a school district that has demonstrated incompetence of handling existing money without seeing dramatic reform of their conduct and removal of those responsible for the mistakes.

So now they're going to hold a rally or two to sway people into passing this referendum. Is there no end to this begging? And then they resort to scare tactics that they will take away sports, art and music if it doesn't pass. Well, you know what D131?, I'm calling your bluff. I've had enough of your grandstanding and threats. You are shaking in your boots if this don't pass maybe because you will have to explain why you blew 20 million bucks we had in surplus. Maybe a new school board is what we need to run our district instead of tax hikes due to your incompetency.

Vote NO

Anonymous said...

OOOOOO, how shocking, the district wants to pass a referendum and they are trying to gain public support. And you all are trying to not pass a referendum and you are trying to gain public support.

I guess, whoever gains the most public support will win. Oh yeah, that is how an electing works.

I can't believe you people are soooo stupid. "So now they're going to hold a rally or two to sway people into passing this referendum." YES that is excatly what they are doing because they want to WIN.

VOTE YES, YES, YES, YES

Anonymous said...

"removal of those responsible for the mistakes"--yep, that would include the school board!

I notice that both districts 129 and 204 have scheduled forums where citizens can ask incumbent school board members and challengers questions to help them decide whom to support in the upcoming elections. But in D131 the bigwigs want to ignore our questions & concerns (as they've done over the last 2 years or so). Instead, we get what? A "rally"!

If anything, I will be less inclined to vote yes now, because I feel that I'm being patronized. Instead of this district respecting my intelligence and giving me an opportunity to meet the candidates and ask questions, I get a pep rally??

Sorry, for me "the issue is over".

And my wallet is closed.

Anonymous said...

It is okay that your wallet is closed because there was probably no money in it anyway.

Anonymous said...

you know it is wise to watch your wallet. You deserve a fair acounting of money spent by the district, the city, and the county. How about the state? The federal government? My wallet is close to empty and I'm not blowing my money anywhere except on these bozo's.No it's not that easy anymore. We work hard in Aurora and we deserve better than this district has afforded us.

Anonymous said...

I can't help but think those that favor a tax hike and say to vote yes, don't even live in D131.
It's easy to spend money when its not yours.

What???, we should keep throwing money at the school district to cover their inadequacy to manage our money?
The board has proven they do not know how to spend money. If they don't have it, they can't spend it.

Anonymous said...

First things first: replace the School Board (or at least the 4 that are up for reelection). Their secrecy & incompetence are largely responsible for this mess, IMHO.

Then, and only then, will I consider voting for a referendum.

This district has lost my respect and needs to "EArn" it back.

Anonymous said...

I would encourage all of you to go and let them know that the people have had enough and that we are voting NO! to astronomical raises given to administrators.

NO to bad land deals (the Police Palace, And the Hi Lite)

No to Imcompetence and No to the ediots who think they run this town.

No to these threats & politics.

I would advise men of the cloth amoung others to 'be weary of men who call good evil and evil good'

These are unholy aliances that are being made and the retrobution will be great!

VOTE NO! to this referedum our children's future depends on it!

Anonymous said...

Isn't combining politics and religion like electricity and water? What about separation of church and state. What genious decided to hold a political rally on church grounds and why?

Anonymous said...

Ask the board and admin of 131 how they justify the raises of 75% and more, to not just a few administrators, during the time the budget was running 4 million short and $20 million surplus was dwindling quickly.

The people rallied last time at the election booths with a resounding NO to the referendum.

Voices will be heard again, from the silent majority.

PRAY- for our nation- ll Chronices 7:14 (and our community)

First of all 'Separation of Church and State' is a myth.

It isn't mentioned in any of the founding documents of this country.

I love when people quote it because it shows how ignorant of the constitution and history they are and it is usually quoted by some far left liberal or bleeding heart.

The concept of not establishing a 'State Religion' as was the case in England at the time is however a very real and necessary concern. Today however religion is so watered down and no group has the power that the Church of England had at the time or the catholic church in Europe at then time and prior.

I am actually for Pastors, priests, and religous leaders taking a role in our community and country. They should be the moral compasses that we can look to void of political influence to stand up for right and condemn evil.

This however is not often enough the case.

As far as the rally on Sunday I respect Pastor Smith very much however on this I totally disagree with him.

This referendum is the worst thing that could happen to 131.

My hope is that Mr. Smith's 'unholy aliance' with the likes of the mayor and the ever bumbling D131 board and administration is based on his genuine beliefs and not political gain.

My fear is that it is not.

The mayor and these fools are beyond incompetent and in my view are EVIL incarnante.

If Pastor Smith really cares about the 'children' he will begin showing up at school board meetings and demanding accountability.

These fools let the police palace land be sold to the city at way less than market value based on a 3 year old assessment. They bought the lie of the mayor and Bigelow about the Hi-lite property hook line and sinker they gave raises to administration staff as much as %70 and NOW we are suppossed to bail them out?

I think not!

Mr. Smith you should be ashamed of yourself on this one.

I hope you don't run your church's finances the way 131 runs theirs.

God and Jesus Christ will be voting yes for the referendum. So that is two more in favor.

Hey 5:19, try rereading the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights:

"Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Sounds like they wanted a separation of church and state to me........

To the blogger that said that God and Jesus Christ are going to be voting yes. I do not think they are residents, so they probably will not have their votes counted, however if they are and they are in fact voting make sure you get photos, the schoold board could use more money to waste.

I do not care either way if the rally is held at a church or not. It has nothing to do with anything. I do, however object to the statement that God and Jesus are going to do anything. Have you heard from them recently? If they are talking to you on any kind of regular basis, I suggest you go for help now.

I think not, she paid bills she was not to pay with out approval and others bills late. One little Condo board we at Bell Terrace who know her can not believe you fellow tax payers could allow her to be President of the school board let alone manage a budget. That is who the yes voters are working so hard for. Then others ask about the 20 million. Yes voters stand outside Bell Terrace the large building to the back find out about her budget skills. DO NOT VOTE YES UNTIL WE HAVE A NEW SCHOOL BOARD.

Gee, aren't there any competent lawyers in Aurora? Or better yet, within District 131? Why does the district have to use a law firm in Orland Park?

Shouldn't as much of the district's business as possible be channelled toward LOCAL professionals?

And if Radakovich did, indeed, bring this Orland Park law firm onto the district's payroll that would be a big red flag for me. I'd look over their books with a fine-tooth comb, expecting to find the same squandering of our funds made famous by Radakovich (landscaping, California trip...)

Keep exposing these tax-wasting bozos--we deserve to know where all our money went!!

Regarding the "myth" of separation of church and state:

Quoting James Madison in a letter to Robert Walsh in 1819,

"strongly guarded... is the separation between religion and government in the Constitution of the United States."

Again by Madison in a letter of 1811 to Baptist Churches;

"practical distinction between Religion and Civil Government is essential to the purity of both, and as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States."

Thomas Jefferson wrote the following to Danburg Baptist Groups:

"...American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus BUILDING A WALL OF SEPARATION BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE."

It seems that these two men have interpreted the meaning of the this amendment for us many years ago. As for me, I believe them.

For the head of the East Aurora school referendum committee, Sunday afternoon was a time to kick off the "rusty and the dusty." It was a time to "turn sermons into service."

Chairman Mark Smith launched the referendum campaign Sunday with a rousing, high-energy pep rally involving about 150 students, faculty and community supporters. The district is asking voters to approve a 75-cent tax hike and Smith, the pastor at Faith and Family Christian Church, was not shy about bringing up athletes and students who could be affected if the referendum does not pass on April 17.

"We have 13,000 reasons to get this done," said Smith as he was flanked by a dozen East High football players and students. "This is what it's all about. If don't do it for these guys, all is lost."

School officials have said they'd be forced to make $6.7 million in budget cuts over the next three years -- including slashing all sports, music and art programs -- if the referendum doesn't pass.

The referendum would raise the tax rate by 75 cents for every $100 of equalized assessed valuation on a home. On a house worth $100,000 that would typically mean a $250 increase in their tax bill.

Clad in the red and black associated with East High, Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner asked those in attendance to consider weighing the short-term cost of a tax hike against some of the long-term costs to the community if the referendum fails.

"I'm not here to tell anyone how to vote on the referendum -- that's a personal decision," Weisner said. "But when we say we can save money by not supporting this referendum, what I would suggest is we should also be asking: 'How much will this cost if I don't support the referendum -- and can I afford it?'"

Sunday afternoon's excitement didn't block out the obstacles the district still faces. Voters overwhelmingly rejected a request for an increase of 85 cents per $100 of assessed valuation in November. Smith didn't hesitate to point out where the committee's focus will have to be: voter participation and hard work.

"Momentum is on our side," Smith said. "Excitement is on our side. But this is not enough. We need to turn our momentum into movement. Some have asked whether we are able. We're more than able. The issues is: Are we willing?"

On both March 17 and March 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., anyone interested in helping can come to Faith Family and Christian Church, 250 E. Indian Trail Road, where fliers and yard signs will be available. And, at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday, the referendum committee will also meet at Faith Family.

A final rally will be held April 15 in the East High auditorium, where Smith challenged the entire student body to attend.

East schools need support from voters

March 11, 2007
There's a massive voter-registration effort being conducted right now on the East Side of Aurora by the School District's referendum supporters. The Rev. Mark Smith, who leads the Yes 131 committee, is convinced voters who have traditionally turned down education tax increases will once again show up in droves. That means the number of "yes" votes must increase substantially to have a shot at passing the 75-cent operating-fund hike.

Smith doesn't downplay the impact of $6.7 million in budget cuts the district will be facing over the next three years if the referendum fails. He sees the quality of our schools on the East Side declining over the next two decades, which will ultimately deflate property values and lead to an increase in poverty and demand for social services. He predicts a negative lasting impact on the city as a whole.

That's why he thinks it's time for residents on the East Side to do their part in making Aurora a better place to live. In short, more people need to get out to vote, particularly Hispanics and blacks. A financial investment now will keep costs down in the future.

The last day to register to vote at various locations is March 20. After that, until April 14, grace-period registration can only be done at the Kane County elections office (and votes must be cast at the time of registration). Please do your part and have a say in the April 17 election, whether you live on the East Side of Aurora or elsewhere. Especially when it comes to education, every vote is crucial.

I Would have to say that from what I could tell from the Beacon photo less than 100 people attended the rally. Notice the beacon states no number very u-beaconesque for them on an article of this nature so that tells me the turn out was very low.

On another note the editorial in sundays paper shows me how out of touch the folks for the referedum are.

"He sees the quality of our schools on the East Side declining over the next two decades, which will ultimately deflate property values and lead to an increase in poverty and demand for social services. He predicts a negative lasting impact on the city as a whole."

Hello this has already occurred under years of mismanagement by the very board and administrators you are asking us to give more money to.

"A financial investment now will keep costs down in the future."

This shows the lack of knowledge of basic economics.

Economics is always supply and demand period. It is a nice quote of fluff for people who don't have a clue but those who vote know and understand this for what it is.

'In short, more people need to get out to vote, particularly Hispanics and blacks'

Why make this a race thing? They can vote like everyone else can't they? This statement is a characterisation that it is the 'old whiteys' fault for the poor education of D131.

I can tell you that that is not the case and this is quite offensive to us who have a full understanding of this situation and truly want what is best for all the students in D131.

More mismanagment and money to be wasted on inflated salary's and lack of accountability is not what is needed.

FOLKS don't be fooled by the smoke of " it is for the children"

Yes it is which is why you need to vote NO and restore accountability back to the process.

A vote NO is a Vote for the future of D131 and the students.

Voting no is like sticking you head in the sand. The problems with the district are not solved by voting no. If you want to get different board members in there then vote them in. Voting no to the referendum only states that you don't support the kids in this district. Almost all of the top administrative staff in the last 3 years has turned over. The inflated administrative salaries are a thing of the past. Voting no does change the past but it will negatively influence the future. Believe or not the East side is not the most desirable place to live. Don't support the schools and see how much better the East side becomes. How about you support the school district for once and see what might be possible. It's not like the East side gives the school district a lot of money to work with and with the lowest tax rate around it is not like they have been asking for a lot either. It's not like everyone on the East side have been great supporters of the school district and then suddenly got burned. Step up to the plate and act like a community that cares. By the way I was at the rally and I counted 154 people.

Lets look at the lies you spout!

'Almost all of the top administrative staff in the last 3 years has turned over.'

This is flat not true! While some have, most have not, yes many have simply shuffled to new positions Even Superintendent Roberts is nothing more than a re-shuffle of the same old deck!

And is this is tru where are the results? The district is worse off not better.

"The inflated administrative salaries are a thing of the past."

They are? Apparently you didn't see the pay raises these folks got! Some in the upwards of 70% !
I wish my job would give me such a raise with such crappy results.

"It's not like the East side gives the school district a lot of money to work with..."

Again the facts don't match, as a matter of fact D131 spends more per student than almost all of the neighboring district all of which get better results.

"Voting no is like sticking you head in the sand. "

I would state just the oposite:

By continueing to give these moron administrators and board members the money to bandage the problem they will never fix it.

The problem is the poor administration and lack of fiscal restraint.

I have 3 kids in the district and numerous relatives, friends and neighbors whom I care about.

To say Voting No means you don't care is an insult to all of us.

As for the number who attended, My nieghbor went and said it was well less than 100 for what it is worth.

Anonymous said...

First things first. Give me some school board members and administrators that I can TRUST, and then I'll not only vote "Yes", I'll do what I can to encourage others to vote "Yes", too!

But ignore my concerns, answer my questions with "no comment" and "the issue is over", and expect me to fork over more money?? I don't think so!

This referendum doesn't have a prayer (sorry, Rev. Smith) of passing until we taxpayers feel respected. And that's just not happening yet!

Anonymous said...

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Looking at the facts in the last 3-4 years there is a new superintendent., a new business manager, a new sup. of secondary education (remember when we used to have just a part timer), a new director or technology, a new director of buildings and grounds, and a new director of personnel. Of the top administrators only Dr. Arid is more or less in the same job. I think that is change at the top. If someone is in fact making 70% more than state where the rest of us can see that figure because it does not exist. In terms of what taxpayers from the East side give, it is around 35% of the total budget. In most districts that number would be closer to 65-70% of the total budget. The state provides more than 50% of the budget for East Aurora. As far as how much is being spent per student that is due to the fact that they are deficit spending. If they weren't deficit spending by $3-$4 million per year that number would look much different and they would not be spending the same as other school districts. The fact of the matter is that they should be spending significantly more than other school districts because they have a much larger number of students in need (low income, ESL, etc.) than other districts. The reality is that it cost more to educate a kid from poverty who does not speak English as their first language than it does the middle class kid who speaks fluent English.
To vote no in my opinion is an insult to the kids.

Anonymous said...

Then it is time for them to speak English. Cut, dried and over!!!!

Anonymous said...

It is interesting to me when it is brought up that the state and federal government provide over 50% of the budget for district 131. Where does the state and federal government get that money? From us.
Shouldn't the state and federal government be assisting the districts that do have special considerations? Where they are more heavily burdened by "out of the ordinary" situations?
Some of this needs to be answered by our elected officials in the federal and state governments but it has to start somewhere.
Why is it, if you say no to just this particular issue, we are turning our backs on the kids and the district? Why isn't it, if you don't demand reform and more fiscal responsibility, you are turning your back on this district, community, and all that reside here?
I can say that I am tired of seeing the name calling and nasty comments. We all have a right to our opinions and last I knew it was one of our rights to express those thoughts and opinions without fear of retribution. Many good people have lost their lives so we can do that. Lets be adults here. Post your side of the issue but be respectful of others. If we all thought the same, we wouldn't need democracy.

Anonymous said...

Yes the government does give the district WAY over 50% of its budget but do not say that it is is from you people of EAST AURORA. SOME of it comes from you but not very much. When the governemnt MOSTLY supports a school it is STATE money that comes from EVERYBODY in the state. That means that my parents that live in Naperville have to support YOU because you can't do it yourself, and farming people down in southern Illinois have to support you because you can't.

Let's all grow up and support ourselves with money we make. And lets send our kids to school on our dime.

D131 for the most part is poverty level and senior citizens. We would be willing to pass the referendum if there was an accounting of what is going to be done. As it stands, there is no plan or agenda, so we know that the current school board will keep on using the taxpayers money to raise administators salaries and it will not be for the children. At least on the West side Ryland has a plan but not in D131.

I would like to know if that last rally they are planning to pass the referendum is legal as it is being done at East High. Also, Ryland, I believe is having a forum for the ones running for school board. Why has not Roberts done something like this? Makes one wonder, doesn't it? WHO ARE THE LAST 3 THAT ALL OF SUDDEN ARE RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD? IS IT A PLANT? Have not seen or heard anything about them and what their ideas are. When did they turn their petitions in? Was it on time? Lisa Moralez, where are you on this? You let the Beacon know about Nell Johnsom, but you did not let the Beacon know about the other three. Was their petitions turned in on time? Again, makes one wonder, doesn't it?

To 11:00 p.m.--

Why, you ask, does the school board go into "executive session" to discuss important matters?

One word that sums up how these folks choose to do business:

SECRECY.

This school board has a history of withholding information from the public, and ignoring repeated requests for explanation of their many controversial decisions.

And contrast this with our neighbors to the west, District 129. Their website provides up-to-date agendas, minutes, press releases, and district news, all with no password required! And public forums where citizens can meet school board candidates and ask questions (what a revolutionary idea!).

REPLACE THE SCHOOL BOARD FROM HELL!

Illinois election code prohibits schools from using any public funds to urge you to vote in support of a particular candidate or referendum choice. Examples of violations:

Use of school facilities to hold meetings.
Use of school resources (web site, copiers, etc.)
Kids being told to tell their parents to vote "yes"
School-supplied materials describing the referendum positively (i.e. "good for our schools", "badly needed")
Use of personnel paid by the school in related efforts
A first-time violation is a Class B misdemeanor, a second violation is a more serious Class A misdemeanor. Violations should be reported to the State's Attorney of the county.

Schools are allowed to provide "information" but cannot make a specific endorsement or ask for a certain vote. Obviously, the distinction between "information" and an endorsement is a slippery one, so it is advised to key a close eye on these kinds of activities. Here is the section of the Illinois code that applies:

(10 ILCS 5/9-25.1) Sec. 9-25.1. Election interference.
(a) As used in this Section, "public funds" means any funds appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly or by any political subdivision of the State of Illinois.
(b) No public funds shall be used to urge any elector to vote for or against any candidate or proposition, or be appropriated for political or campaign purposes to any candidate or political organization. This Section shall not prohibit the use of public funds for dissemination of factual information relative to any proposition appearing on an election ballot, or for dissemination of information and arguments published and distributed under law in connection with a proposition to amend the Constitution of the State of Illinois.
(c) The first time any person violates any provision of this Section, that person shall be guilty of a Class B misdemeanor. Upon the second or any subsequent violation of any provision of this Section, the person violating any provision of this Section shall be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor.

Look at the schools report cards!

It doesn't take a Phd. to tell ya......someone is not doing their job. The administrators who continue to dump our kids education money on new and improved programs.
That are failing.

Just teach the kids to read, for pete's sake!!

Look at that pitiful score. At the meetings they brag about our kids improving. Yet, according to the scores we are at the bottom. I gues sthat is something to brag about. We are not in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, but we have a solid LAST place. These kids are in high school, so they were spending money all along to improve on these students education.

But 131 failed our kids and now are kids schools are failing.

I say No more money. Take it from those who are not earning their pay or fire them. Any other worker would be held accountable for poor performance.

to 834pm your parents in naperville wouldn't stand for the board at 131 for one minute. Your right, they pay for us, we pay for them. The naperville residents hold their board highly accountable as the people of 131 are attempting to do. Thats why they have bus service and an excellent reputation. District 131 residents are concerned about how far behind they are already and the board wants more money after the fiscally irresponsible way they have handled it so far. Ask you Naperville parents about that! Tom Weisner wants the referendum to pass because the Shodeen project is going to impact the system even more and he want the citizens to help the developer defray more long term cost and have greater profit if we foot that bill too. Maybe this isn't the place to ask but I was back visiting some friends last weekend and I drove by where the old train station use to be. Are they testing missiles there? There must have been a half dozen craters. What gives?

There is no accountability without full disclosure. The K12 financial reporting is so loose that it promotes misinformation and fraud. That is the opinion of financial experts who reviewed reports for districts seeking tax increases.

This isn’t a new concept. Obviously the public has always been involved in making the decision of whether, in the words of Thomas Jefferson, “taxes were deficient or superabundant.” As President in 1802 Jefferson said that there should be --
“…a simplification of the form of accounts in the treasury department and in the organization of its officers so as to bring everything to a single centre, we might hope to see the finances of the Union as clear and intelligible as a merchant's books, so that every member of Congress and every man of any mind in the union should be able to comprehend them, to investigate abuses, and consequently to control them.”

Check this website out it's in Texas and some of their school districts post there checks on there for the people to see what they spend. It proably would never happen here but at least some districts in Texas what to let people know how they spend their money.

Naperville might not have the gangs we have but they do have some high end car thiefs. since 11/06 till today they have been going in business parking garages and parking lots stealing parts from high end vehicles and even have stolen some cars. Businesses have had to hire extra security to drive around the parking lots.

Here is some cynicism for you.

This city has many Tax Increment Financing districts not least of which is the River City TIF in which the Shodeen project is located. The exact number of TIF in Aurora I do not know.

Note the following:

1. TIF districts generate money from the incremental increase in taxes of the properties contained within the TIF during the life of the TIF.

2. All things being equal the incremental increase will come from the usual rise in assessed value of the property contained within the TIF.

3. The incremental tax collections for the TIF will also go up by virtue of increases in tax rates. So if tax rates go up the tax collections for the TIF should accelerate and money will be diverted into the TIF account at a faster rate.

4. TIF districts revenues are paid from the incremental increases for all taxing districts not just the city portion of your tax bill. So when any governmental unit increases the tax rate the TIF revenues should rise faster than it otherwise would.

So it would appear that there are several concepts floating around with respect to tax increases.

First, the TIF districts will gain more money than they otherwise would.

Second, the taxing bodies, in this case the school districts do not get the entire increase as some of the increase is diverted to the TIF district accounts.

Third, that increase will help shore up the strain placed upon the TIF funds by such projects as Shodeen. I understand that the city will be borrowing from another TIF as well as casino revenues to fund Shodeen.

Fourth, if the taxing bodies, the school district does not get the entire increase how much of the increase is required to make up for the loss of revenue to the TIF?

I guess that the city has to be in favor of tax increases of other taxing bodies. A tax increase by the school districts appears to facilitate the city spending more money on projects like Shodeen.

The Need for Public School Financial Transparency

The Illinois government-run school system continues to resist financial transparency. Instead of fully disclosing how it’s spending $20 billion dollars of taxpayers’ money, they cry out for more.

In the private sector there’s something called GAAP accounting practices. GAAP stands for “Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.” In the government-run school system in Illinois we see PAAP – “Politically Accepted Accounting Principles.”

We’ve got a simple question: how can anyone not support full disclosure of all government revenues and expenditures? Yet when it comes to the public school spending crisis in Illinois, those who stand to personally profit from increasing taxes resist transparency.

As one observer has stated, it’s time to “solve the lexicography of the dissemblers.” Currently there is no citizen oversight of government-run school spending, and there’s precious little effective school board oversight, either.

There should be a standardized accounting and full disclosure of all district revenues and expenditures (including the district’s check register) on the World Wide Web, including:

A list of all employees in an organizational chart.
Every classroom expenditure should be outlined.
Every contract – including those of administrators, should be posted in its entirety. (It’s clear that many school boards prefer to keep some of the perks and some of the details of the benefit packages away from the public eye, since the scale of their generosity with money earmarked for educating kids would rouse ire on the part of the taxpayers.)

Leonard,

Another good reason to say NO to the referendum.

Anonymous said...

Did anyone see those HUGE new billboards up on the east side?

Anonymous said...

nope have't seen them where are they.

Anonymous said...

It is to bad that it is to late for us taxpayers to put in our own referndum. It should be to lower the taxes, not raise them. Bet this referendum would pass.

It is a shame that D131 does not listen to the people. They keep doing what they always do and do nothing to change and we need change for all of us. The West side seems to try to listen to the people. We need different things in this district instead of building high density housing. We need business to help us out. We need parents that will make their children learn English. It's not a free ride here we all have to do our part to make this a better district and that means the parents with children in our schools need to be more involved.

Is it legal to borrow from another TIF? How is that accounted for. It seems like it would be illegal to shift that money around.

Here is some interesting information that was printed in the Education Funding Request Proposal by Marin Gonzalez Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Curriculum (who lives in d129 by the way)
"East Aurora School District 131 lies east of the Fox River, which divides the city geographically, racially, and socioeconomically. In the past 20 years, West Aurora School District has gained upscale housing developments, country clubs and major retail outlets while the East Aurora District has gained gangs, violence, and a HUD-designated Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area (NSRA). In the NSRA, nearly 40% of adults over age 25 have less than a 9th grade education; nearly 20% of people live in poverty, compared to 9% city-wide; and an additional 72% have low to moerate incomes, compared to 38% city wide (City of Aurora, Diviion of Neighborhood REdevelopment and Kasarda Demographic Report 2004.)"
"All three of the middle school and the high school are on the STate's Academic Watch List. Two of its three middle schools are in NCLB-required Restructuring, and one is in Corrective Actin. East High has been in imporvement Status for three years."
Where are the meetings and rally's to address this? If we are so proverty ridden and under educated, how do they expect us to pay for a tax increase?
This grant application, by the way, was for a school security grant that was overseen by Linda Chapa-LaVia. This information was obtained at the grant open house held at East High School the late afternoon of Monday March 12.
Just thought I would share.

One thing for sure, Marin Gonzalez, Assistant Superintendent and former E.A. principal does not know how to spell, or does not take the time to proof read to see if she made any mistakes. Wonder what that says to the place where the grant came from? And this was published in the Education Funding Request Proposal? Good one and how ironic!!!!

Go to thechampion.org and on the right hand side you will see The School Accountability Project and when you click you can see how they have broke down salaries for Administrators and teachers for D131 and D129 very interesting.

VOTE YES

Anonymous said...

Vote Yes--

ONLY after we have a new school board;

and ONLY after we taxpayers are told where those millions of dollars went.

Until then--

VOTE NO!!

Anonymous said...

When I start getting raises like the administrators do then I might think about voting yes.

Anonymous said...

Well if you want raises like that you better get a higher education than 2nd grade.

Anonymous said...

And you, 3/15/07, do not have the mentality of a second grader or the intelligence.

So fervent is the desire for that credential, both for prestige and an automatic pay raise, that the graduate schools are crowded with ambitious teachers. In one recent year, some 106,000 master's degrees were awarded to teachers. ...

But lest we be impressed, it should be remembered that these are mainly not advanced degrees in knowledge, such as English or biology, but only in the supposed "art and science" of teaching, adding little that is scholarly to the teacher's armamentarium. One study of 481 master's degrees in education ... showed that the graduate students took 26 credits in still more education courses and only 9 in the liberal arts. Only 1 in 5 were required to write a thesis, and 1 in 25 to show proficiency in a foreign language.

Hardly masters of anything.

In a study released in January 2007, Greene reported that –
"When considering teacher pay, policymakers should be aware that public school teachers, on average, are paid 36% more per-hour than the average white-collar worker and 11% more than the average professional specialty and technical worker. They should be aware that the higher relative pay for public school teachers exists in almost every metro area for which data are available. Finally, they should be aware that paying public school teachers more does not appear to be associated with higher student achievement."

D131 Here is what your teachers are paid

You tell me but I bet it is on average way more than the parents who send their kids to D131 schools make.

So by posting this you believe that all teachers should be paid in the poverty level?

Anonymous said...

I Don't think having several teachers making more than 100K

Several in the 70K 80 K and 90K ranges is hardly poverty level.

Plus they are making this without any regard to results.

Now I know the problems aren't the teaches fault. I fault the administration for most of it an you should see what they make.

I think it is for the public to decide I am just helping to provide the info.

The fact that you state these salaries are poverty level shows your lack of logic and understanding.

Don't forget those pays are not for a full years work.

They get june July and August off plus 2 weeks at christmas and a week for spring break and all the holidays under the sun.

Heck with all that they only work a little more than half a year.

It is basically a part time job!

Anonymous said...

Shut up about teachers being part time. You don't have a damn clue what teachers do.

Anonymous said...

Teaching is NOT a part time job you ignorant moron. I thought this referendum was not about the teachers.

Anonymous said...

Saw the bill board on Broadway above Foremost Liquors. Perfect place for it as anyone who votes yes is probably or should be drunk.

Teachers a part time job???..you don't know what you are talking about!!!!!!!!!!!

BLOG NICKNAMES...FEEL FREE TO ADD ON!

OK. It's time to have some fun around here. I have been observing this blog for while and some nicknames have been given to city officials that are SO funny.

I think it will be just as funny to start some nicknames on here. Here we go:

DICK Lawrence for Rick Lawrence because he obviously is suffering from the lack of something.

Stephanie KifoNITwit because she isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

RayMAN Carlson: Have you seen choice of clothes, machismo strut and mullet?

Dee BEAVER: she has that annoying voice that can cut wood and she waddles like she has a little tail

FAT PAT Lorance: enough said. have you seen that belly?

Carol FarFROM REALITY: School Board President who is not that bright. She sort of just floats around

Dan BORErreiro: he's a wet piece of lettuce

Anymore? How about Tom UNweisner or Richard irVINDICTAVE or John Whiteyonlyfountains'Peters.

Let's start something fun and quit being so bitter around here.

HERES TO THE LAUGHS!

This isn't about the teachers.
EA pays about average of what is paid in IL. I for one am glad we can get teachers to stay any length of time.

It gives our children consistency and stability. The teachers pay is not the problem, stay focused people. It is the managers of EA 131.Like any big corporations, they have bloated salaries and benefit packages and like none other than for us to blame the underlings, their "workers" for this mess.

The teachers have little to NO say in the way the district funds are spent. if residing in EA they have the same community vote as the rest of us.

I am not a teacher, but I am a parent and community member who exercises my right to vote. I say No to the referendum.

To the rest of the people like myself, I say get off your asses and quit blaming everyone else. We have all been slackers, we need to be involved.

Go to the meetings, make the "mangers" accountable speak up, speak out and VOTE!

Hey R some people do think it is partly about teachers and on this blog sometimes posters post how they feel under different subjects. I did take the time to go to that website and look at the administrator salaries and pay increases and found out for myself that what some say is true about their high pay increases so any information that can support what posters put on there is good. I really don't need you preaching to me and I'm not putting blame on anyone but just trying to find out information.

If your a teacher and feel you are working to hard QUIT and join the real world

Anonymous said...

How about, If you are not a theacher and you are jealouse of how easy the job is why don't you get an education and become one, and find out for yourselves.

What I want to know is who are the other three that are running for school board. They took the time to get their petionsion sign and no one has heard a thing from them. You cann't even find anything about them so why did they do that? So maybe since we haven't heard anything about them and we do need some new people on the school board maybe I will vote for them and one other that is not on the school board now.

For the teacher that wrote I was jealous I am a CPA. I paid for my own education unlike yourself. Your only worried if the tax increase fails you may not make it in the real world. Teachers are the bottom feeders of a college degree everyone knows that

Anonymous said...

Blog nicknames, bottom feeders...it sounds like this could be Russ P. the board member from Hometown.

Some folks think cuz they have certain jobs or a house in a certain part of town that makes them superior over all others.

Tis sad. But to try and argue with this fool would only give the appearance of 2 fools arguing, so I shall let them ramble, another thing that makes them feel important. They just don't realize people are not listening, they are just being respectfully tolerant. r

See today's Openline in the Beacon. Michelle Gaw was bitching about someone voting "no" on the east side school referendum was saying no to the children.
I say how easy it is for her to spend someone else's money when you live in Oswego and more than likely don't know all the facts.

A "no" vote Michelle is a no to the school board corruption and essentially a "yes" to tax reform.

Mark Smith lives in Oswego... He is Clayton Mohammed friend. Clayton takes poor kids to this cult on Indian Trial (to this so called religion) which supports Marks wife, and father in high style. Now they will get East High School free Call Jay Augustine to prove it he can not come up with the receipts. This school board has crossed the line. If this passes I will call ACLU then all the tax dollars will go to the Orland Park law office (Canna & Canna) to defend them. I will not allow Smith & Clayton to brainwash the kids. Clayton you are no Jesse Jackson

I heard they are having easter services now at East. Look at the bill board EAST AT EASTER

Anonymous said...

NOT EASTER, what will happen to the world if a SCHOOL celebrates EASTER?

Nothing.

When my church was being rebuilt we used a school auditorium to hold services and I don't think they charged us for it because on a Sunday they were not using it. But then again Aurora is the most close-minded and racist place I ever been so I guess you guys would hate something like that.

I wonder if the school district has a policy in place for something like that. As for close mindiness I don't think we are. when you rent out to someone even a church their should be some charge in case of damage. There is also a chance someone might get hurt and they could sue the school district. Also they should be careful because if they do let them have it for free then any other church that would want to use it they would have to let them. I found this in a search about renting school property and it is Oswego's policy about renting from the schools.

Yes, this just shows you how this school board does what they want without listening to people. If this school district is in need of money they should charge them rental fees if not any church or charity should be able to use East if they want. Besides that I heard that church had 1000 members. Is the auditorium or gym big enough for that. You know their are capacity laws about how many people can fit into an area. Also, did they have them sign a waiver incase someone gets hurt or something gets broken that they are responible? Since this is going to be a church service if they are going to be using candles has the fire department oked that. I work with renting out facilities and there are alot of issue that need to be addressed before renting or letting groups use your property. So if anyone knows the capicities of the auditorium or gym and you think they are going to be more that what they should have call the fire department.

Anonymous said...

Gym total capacity is about 4000
Auditorium about 1600 to 1800

Good enough.

Ok, when this church service is done who is going to clean up after them sense they are not charging them to use it? Who is paying for the lights and other things that need to be on when they are there? It is us taxpayers that's who and I don't believe that with the school board asking for more money and threating to cut programs even if the referendum passes should let anyone use East High without paying something.
SAY NO TO THE REFERENDUM.

Anonymous said...

Does anybody KNOW FOR A FACT that a church is using the school for FREE? Or all youa ll just bitching for the sake of bitching.

Anonymous said...

Someone said that they where but don't really know for sure. School board members and others who know read this blog and could answer this question but I doubt they will. I bet even if you asked at a school board meeting they wouldn't tell you but there are ways of finding out.

Anonymous said...

Isn't this a "public" school. Does the school charge for Boy Scouts or any other organization using "public" facilities during times that school is not in session?

Anonymous said...

Good point about boy scouts or any other group if they charge. But since the school board doesn't make that public we don't know. They should put their cards on the table and let us know. They should also have some sort of policy out there about renting out the school so we can see it.

Anonymous said...

Yes the school allows use of facilities. Many schools have been used for many purposes, ya' just haven't paid attention till now.

Nit picking school rental policies is not where and how the school is "exploiting the students" as this blog says.

Mrs. Hawks and Clayton have taken advantage of the respect the kids have for them and have used them to try and get sympathy votes. They have young people going door to door talking about taxes they know nothing about, ticking off some senior citizens.

Get off the blog and be productive. Do something don't just tap your keyboard about it!

Anonymous said...

I don't think people are nit picking someone just asked a question and it was answered. I really don't care if they let groups use it. The more you no referendum people get cocky about the issues and stuff makes me want to change my vote to yes and then move out of Aurora and sell my house to three families.

Anonymous said...

They will be one large extended family. All related and not a violation of anything, particularly fair housing standards.

So going back to the person who gave out the teachers' salaries and said it was more than the parents made...are the teachers suppose to be punished for being educated and wanting to find a good job. We go to college, get a degree and teach YOUR kids and we should not make a decent living? Who do you want teaching your kids? Someone who is paid minimum wage, not educated and doesn't care if what they do is educational? Come on...you expect teachers to be professional, educated and responsible for your kids, pay for it!!!!!! Teachers are required to get many, many college credits every 5 years (the equivalent of a masters) and we are expected to pay for it ourselves. Shouldn't our salary increase to help us? If you want to remain ignorant, then that is unfortunately how your kids will grow up.

Anonymous said...

The teachers do not really get time off. In the summers they are taking classes or professional development workshops. They are expected to maintain their teaching certificate.
This means that they have to take 60 hours of college credit every five years. That's like getting a Master's degree every five years. For the amount of school they have, they are waaaaay underpaid. Vacations are spent reorganizing or planning. During the year, teachers don't even have time for their kids, let alone themselves. Why do you think teachers look the way they do? They also have to do special work for the district, like attend events. The reason the teachers make more than the D131 parents is because many of D131 parents have no education. Teachers work to get what they have. I know because I'm a teacher.

I find it interesting that so many of you have time to sit and criticize our ditrict's budget, yet there were only two citizens at the last board meeting where, incidentally, the district financial officer publically presented the district's budget, which included very specific details about where the district's money is spent, and was then available for questions from the board and the public. To my surprise, there were no concerned citizens asking questions. If you want the school board to be accountable, you have to make them accountable by actually showing up at the meetings and asking these questions that you want answered so badly, and making your voices heard. The meeting schedules and agendas are made public weeks in advance.

It would behoove all of us to try and find a way to breach the gap and look for common ground so that we can find a way to raise hopes for a better future for all the children of District 131.
