City of Aurora Restricts Public at Committee of the Whole Meeting and Violates Open Meetings Act

The Weisner administration continues to make the City of Aurora look ridiculous to the many media covering the Planned Parenthood controversy and potentially violating the Illinois Open Meetings Act in the process.

We learned that for Tuesday's Commitee of the Whole meeting held on the 5th Floor of City Hall, entrance to the building was again closed and public access limited under the guise of "fire code regulations."

Given the large number of media, members of the public and city staff that would be in attendance at such a meeting, one would think that if the Weisner administration could think ahead to have police officers (sources say it was Sgt. Groom, who apparently has been assigned to regular door duty these days) guarding city hall's entrance, they could have thought ahead to move the meeting to the larger city council chambers.

Perhaps if Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is paying attention, she may want to drag Mr. Weisner and so-called corporation counsel Alayne Weingartz into court and explain the "public" part of public meetings and the consequences of violating the law.

One spectator from inside the meeting reported there were many empty chairs and another spectator who could not enter city hall reported that media were allowed to enter despite the fire code issue.

That last part confuses and concerns us. If safety (fire) was really an issue, shouldn't that include media? Except for the staff of the local fishwrap, the rest of the media are doing a great job covering this controversy and we think should be protected from risks just as much as anyone else.

Considering it's likely the next city council meeting will be standing-room only again with media present, there is no excuse not to plan ahead, move the meeting to a larger venue and cease violating the law.

Maybe Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner will even join the meeting this time.

Weisner and Weingartz appear to be committing a crime:

(5 ILCS 120/4) (from Ch. 102, par. 44)
Sec. 4. Any person violating any of the provisions of this Act shall be guilty of a Class C misdemeanor.

Barsanti should be asked to prosecute something he actually does have jurisdiction over, which I believe includes this issue since City Hall is in Kane County.

there are a bunch of idiots running this city's administration from the mayor to department heads.

I thought about using a word other than idiots, but that's the truth.

Who has the authority to change the location of the meeting? Who can we contact? I don't want to just whine- I want to make myself heard to the people who can make a difference and run this show ACCORDING TO AURORA LAWS. We must have some recourse!

Tons of people will show up about Planned Parenthood; but Weisner is flushing this city down the toliet and tonight is the budget meeting and I be no one will be there. This is somethng that people truly should be worried about.

Wow, as Opens nemesis we agree on something. He defends 'all media, except the fishwrap'. I'd like to mention one of Openline's favorite papers the Kane County Chronicle says "Clinic Had Right to Open".

We have a question, how does a reporter from Openline inquire and display credentials to identify themselves as media and thus be allowed special access? (lol)

Anyone can attend a public meeting, not just media. And the definition of media has changed. Only old gov't and old media still think they are special. Everyone is media today.

Why isn't the fishwrap speaking up against the city for their violations of the law?

True residents of Aurora. You should back your elected Mayor!

JUST THOUGHT YOU WOULD ALL LIKE TO KNOW THAT WEISNER IS NOW PULLING POLICE OFFICERS OFF THE STREETS SO HE CAN HAVE HIS OWN PROTECTION DETAIL. THIS CITY IS VERY SHORT ON POLICE OFFICERS ON THE STREET. HE IS NOW TAKING MORE OFFICERS OFF THE STREET TO PROTECT HIMSELF AND NOT THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY.

Increase the aldemens descretionary spending by 25% are you people ever asking for it. If you could ever figure out that just because someone is elected to office it dosn't make them smart only cunning. Try to find out where this money has gone in the past....bet you cant. Try to find out when and where the meetings deciding where to spend this tax money is to be spent....bet you cant, and if you do you wont be invited to comment or have any input. I know Peters runs a junk pick up with his to keep his ward cronys happy....What a patriot. Oh yeh,you are going to get theNORMAL 3% increase in water this year. Are you going to get your normal 3% raise at work or in your Sosec?

No problem with that, pull some of the guys off the bicycles. Those would be my first choice. Especially the short dirty blonde haired guy that continues to be rude and ignorant to the pedestrians. But yet goes out of his way to make passes at women....
