Medical Helicopter Crash in Aurora | NTSB Investigates

Around midnight last night, a medical transport helicopter crashed near Eola and Liberty in Aurora, with three adults and one infant as fatalities.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the tragedy.

The flight originated from Valley West Hospital and was originally headed to Central DuPage Hospital, but because they were full, instead changed to go to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

The Bell 222 helicopter, operated by Air Angels for an emergency transport, carried a 1 year old girl, nurse, paramedic and the pilot.

Jim Adams, CEO of Air Angels, released the following statement:

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the patient and our crew.  Air Angels is working with the National Transportation Safety Board and FAA to investigate the cause of the accident and we will provide more information as it becomes available."

The helicopter apparently clipped one of the wires for the tower for radio station WBIG-AM 1280, but it's not clear if the helicopter already was in trouble before that.

Air Angels has been operating for 10 years and has had two previous crashes, in 2003 and 2007.  In the 2003 crash, an investigation determined pilot error with only the pilot being killed.  In 2007, the crash was due to mechanical problems, but nobody was hurt.

What a terrible, terrible thing to have happened.
I'm sure everyones thoughts and prayers are with the families.
The poor parents, who were probably driving to the hospital expecting to see their daughter and getting only horrible news.
To give your life while trying to help another is a very noble thing. I know it doesn't help with the sorrow the families feel, but just know they were enriching their lives by helping others.
Condolences and Prayer to all the Families involved.

Things like this can make you stop and think about what is really important. Condolences to all that have been affected by this.

Sad and unfortunate tragedy considering it was to help a baby girl but just shows you bad things can happen to anyone.

Nice job Openline of presenting the story and video.

Why would a helicopter be flying that low? Aren't those radio towers equipped with flashing lights to avoid this type of thing?

Openline...you failed to mention how this crash was Weisner's fault.
You know, our so-called mayor.

Weisner was at CDH, redering the ER full. The chopper had to redirect, thus, it's the so-called mayors fault.

12:47 & 1:52

Miserable fucks.

Weisner ordered the tower lights be shut off to save money.

My Prayers and Condolences also go out to all involved. I agree with Sherry.

It is a sad, sad day when people post those sick comments on such a tragic accident. For once cannot some keep these type of things off such a diffcult time?

Well people do deal with grief in different ways.
In this case, posting slanderous comments about the mayor on a slanderous mayor hating blog site. It only makes sense.

Apparently Openline doesn't feel those comments are sick considering they haven't been removed yet.

Openline, please delete the comment of 3:34. I don't appreciate anyone dropping the F-bomb.

Petty, stupid, no class, no compassion, you invite bad luck into you lives with such comments. You strike me a terrible parent, friend, brother or sister..

At some point you have to be a human or just human waste..

I think it is funny how all of you argue about Aurora politics. What shallow people. You all chose to live in a pit community and then fight over who will continue the urban decay and the fleecing of tax payer dollars...

Does the toliet ever flush here? I still see all of the human waste floating is most city positions..

You all suck

awww shut up. you have no class either or you wouldn't be here commenting.

I saw a news about a helicopter crash and a link to this site. As I read your comments I felt compelled to comment given your attempt to attach your petty goals of smearing someone in public service who is also fighting cancer to four families tragic loss..

You are a cancer on Aurora and all you know..

I am sure there are people who know you and hate you because of who you are..

You can stew in your own hate and filth..

Aurora is a cancer in the body of Illinois. Naperville rocks.

On a side note, it is a sad day for all of us. Please keep those four souls in your prayers.

What other website with any class or dignity and in their right mind would ever link to this website. You know. A website that smears and name calls local politicians and cronies. A website that refers to a mayor as "so-called", a city employee with a middle name of "I Hate People" and a newspaper writer with a middle name of "Zombie". I say, you attract the same kind of commenters as the ones who write these stories. Agree?

If it turns out there was nothing wrong with the helicopter, it will turn out to be the pilot's fault. It doesn't matter if the light was on or not - it is the pilot in command's responsibility to be aware of all obstacles on the course and to fly at an altitude sufficient to clear all obstacles and terrain. That tower didn't come out of nowhere - it is on the charts.
