Election 2009 | Aurora Mayoral Poll Puts Kifowit Far Behind Weisner

3rd Ward Alderman Stephanie Kifowit lags far behind
in a recent poll of likely voters in the Aurora Mayoral race

Preceding the November election, a poll was conducted and a question about the 2009 Aurora Mayoral Race was included.

The poll was after Alderman Rick Lawrence's decision to seek re-election to this 4th Ward seat instead of mayor, so the question was asked about the two other declared candidates at the time, Mayor Tom Weisner and Alderman Stephanie Kifowit.

Among likely registered voters who have previously voted in municipal elections and said they will vote in 2009, the poll was not close with Kifowit only managing to get 7% support overall against Weisner.

OVERALL: Weisner 88%, Kifowit 7%, Undecided 5%

Kifowit did better in her own 3rd Ward with 19% of the vote, but while she overwhelmingly won re-election as Alderman in her ward, the poll still showed a large gap against Weisner when it comes to the race for mayor.

THIRD WARD: Weisner 76%, Kifowit 19%, Undecided 5%

Analysis shows Kifowit has not made any impact since announcing her candidacy and one-on-one against Weisner, she has difficulty.

Some observers had believed that Alderman Lawrence's decision would create opportunity for Kifowit, but thus far, that has not happened.

A supporter for Kifowit says it's "too early" to judge her progress, but others say this shows she has not made an impact despite her campaigning at many public events over the summer and fall.

Alderman Richard Irvin has since announced he is getting into the mayoral race as well. Kifowit says she expected others to get in the race.

Nothing personal against Stephanie, but she really has very little chance.

What is Kifowit's message? City manager? That's never going to happen.

It's sad that nobody else wants this job. We are left with a incompetent Mayor who might not even be able to fulfill his whole term if elected. An Alderwomen who you never has a point nor understands much at all. Finally another Alderman afraid of the current Mayor to even announce that he is running or not.

Wonder why your city is the joke of Illinois.

Just because this post is on the blog doesn't mean it's true. Where is your data? How do we know it isn't made up? I agree, it is early to tell; the campaigns aren't in full swing.

Wow -- so Openline is a Weisner lover? Whatever is the change of mind? Probably he made a big promise to Lawrence to have him drop out and now Lawrence is bowing down to him. Funny how crooked politicians can be bought.

Anonymous said...

As we have seen in the past presidential primaries; polls don't mean a thing. I don't believe a word they say.

Anonymous said...

Why doesn't Openline refer to calling Weisner our "so-called" mayor anymore?

While I haven't made up my mind: This blog stated that a question was asked; however, fails to state what question was asked? It's very easy to have a poll conducted with a slanted question to get the polling results you want. In addition, it's very easy to conduct a poll with a small sample size to get the results you want. This blog doesn't give the sample size either. For example: 22 out of 25 people would give an 88% approval. As Mark Twain said: "There are lies, lies and statistics".

Anonymous said...

Maybe Weisner offered him a job.

Terri Wintermute had polls that said she was going to win. We see how that turned out; now we have a loser, drunk and nit-wit in office for another six years people. Nice choice!

Would you please tell me how the new proposed ordinance basicly fining auto shops for being in business will help the economy of Aurora or for that matter the owners of said shops. Aurora your penalizing people who want to be in business. Arn't the sales taxes enough for you greedy beaureaucrats? Who is going to pay the extra help needed to keep the records required? Who is going to police it after all isn't the police department overworked and short of help as it is? The brains on the city council are at it again trying to get more money for their benefits pacakge while penalizing the hard working producing people of Aurora. My decisison to leave was correct. You too should consider it.

Anonymous said...

Just to cheer you beaureaucrats up you will be glad to know that only 11billion of your benefits are funded nationwide leaving only 740 billion unfunded. Have a good day!

Kifowit voted for the tax increases proposed by Wiesner. Kifowit voted for all the spending. The only difference is Toms a little smarter then Stephanie.

Dear 7:00 a.m,

If you don't understand why we need to pay attention to how and where auto shops are doing business, just drive over to the west side on new york street. once you past rt. 31, look to your right at the mess on the corner at Wilder. junky building, junky cars parked on the parkway, junky signage, garbage, cars on the front yard on the wilder side.

give me a break. this town looks like a ghetto, and I don't give a rat's a** about hardworking people if they can't respect others.

Yea weisner lvers - go weisner, he has done so much for our community

what the hell is there reason to vote for him again, to give him welfare (pay full salary, while at his doctor appointments)

Anonymous said...

Oh - I see, so penalize them ALL because of a few that don't give a crap about their appearance? Wow - with that kind of mentality, what we could DO here in Aurora, huh? I should have to pay for others' nonchalance and indifference? This is another case of too much government interference. It looks like the city just found another way to rack up more fees from small businesses, all while spending more on the policing, cataloguing and insititution of red tape for compliant businesses. Status quo for this city. It shouldn't be across the board, but rather directed at those that need cleaning up. Why does what should be a simple warning and fining process for uncaring businesses need to turn into a yet another moneymaking scheme for the City of Aurora?

Anonymous said...

Kifowit aint got a chance, too Bad:( Weiner boy sucks and should easily be beat. But Kifowit is beholden to the left the far left & has only a slight clue of just how dire this city is in. Irvin has NO clue, and voted for most of the stuff that caused much of this mess we know face.

We need a real leader, my prayer is that a Lauzen or a Luazenesque Real died in the wool Conservative with a clue on how to handle these major financial issue we face here in Aurora, would run.

Face it folks board up the windows and kaddie bar the doors, grab your glock and pray this city is F'd!

So, if our decent automotive business has to park a customer's vehicle in the street during the course of a day's business because we have temporarily run out of room in our parking lot - we get fined?? Why are they singling out automotive businesses for this? Are all small businesses, or not for profits or others going to be fined or penalized for allowing their customers or clients to park in the street? $5000 bond? Again, for all the decently run automotive businesses, this is a slap in the face.

Anonymous said...

I highly doubt that in Kifowit's own ward that she wouldn't get more than 2 out of every ten votes. No way! Has this site been hacked by the Beacon?

Anonymous said...

Quit frankly, if you spread your business onto the street, that's a problem. Do your business somewhere where we don't have to look at it.

And if that means moving to montgomery, so be it.

Anonymous said...

Kifowit makes me sick. What a frickin' joke that pig is. Talk about a real scum bag, she gets first place. Move on and move on out lady!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

It is illegal to park cars in the parkway and in the front yard. If this is going on, then the police are not doing their job. The fines are already in place for things like this by ticketing the cars. The parkway is owned by the city and therefore I would think if the cars are not removed they could be towed.

Anonymous said...

Irvin has not been the alderperson at large long enough to cause most of this mess we now face. Not sticking up for him, just stating facts. The ones causing most of the mess we now face is almost all of the rest of City council.

Anonymous said...

Is the small car business being discussed here a real one? Is it in an area that is zoned for business or is it like some on the East side that just do the work and is not legit? If the business is not legit then people do have a right to complain.

I don't know where this gloom and doom talk is coming from, but the city of aurora is on the way up and weisner is the main reason. more positive things have happened in the last few years than in the past 20....

also, the reason the city needs to regulate businesses is because the "people" have policed themselves for a long time and have failed miserably!

Re:11/20 10:04 Spoken like a true beaureaucrat.

Amen, 10:04, Amen.

Aurora is one place where the Libertarian-minded have nothing to brag about.

Anonymous said...

a-town,
Exactly what has weisner done that is making this town "on the way up"?
Most people I talk to have an issue with all the negative things that this mayor has done.

Anonymous said...

What candidate conducted this poll? Or was it a special interest group? Having done some of the local polling for candidates I will tell you that we would have never included an off-year election question in an even-year campaign poll... It muddies the subject at hand.

Here is the article on the proposed automotive business ordinance:

November 20, 2008
By ANDRE SALLES asalles@scn1.com
AURORA -- "Aldermen are still hashing out the details, but in the near future, auto shop owners and street vendors may have to apply for city licenses.
This week, the City Council Government Operations Committee moved through two long-gestating ordinances. The first regulates automobile repair shops, defining them as any business that receives automobiles for repair, whether for money or not. If the ordinance is approved, owners of these shops, even those currently operating, would have to obtain a license.
That license, according to the current draft of the new law, would cost $100. Additionally, auto shop owners would have to provide the city with a $5,000 bond to cover their business.
The idea, according to aldermen on the committee, is to cut down on parking violations at these shops, as well as restrict noise before and after certain hours. Licensed auto repair shops could not be open before 6 a.m., or after 10 p.m., and aldermen discussed requiring a parking plan as well.
Additionally, auto shop owners would be required to keep a daily record of all vehicles received and returned, including license plate, make and model, name of the owner, and name of the person who dropped the car off.
The penalty for violating this ordinance has not been set, but would range from $50 to $500.
Street vendors
The second law under consideration would require everyone wanting to peddle wares in the city to get a permit from the city clerk's office. Any charitable agency hoping to set up donation drives in the city would also have to get a permit, and apply for it no less than 30 days before starting their campaigns.
To get a permit, applicants would have to certify that none of their employees are convicted sex offenders, have been convicted of a felony, or received two convictions for drunken driving.
The full City Council will get a look at both ordinances next month, with an eye toward approving them on Dec. 9."

If the city wishes to target undesirable automotive businesses, then do so. Honestly, I don't know
of any small businesses that can't have a customer's car parked in front of their business during their business hours in a business district. If it goes beyond that, the city already has measures in place to take care of it, whether in a residential zone or a business district. They haven't named a fee schedule, been specific about who this covers, or said for what purpose the customer's personal information would need to be retained and/or released to the city for. Who decides what the parking "requirements" should be? Why are the upstanding automotive businesses being penalized for the few derelict "businesses"? There are already existing city ordinances to take care of the "automotive businesses" in residential areas that are causing a problem for the citizens, whther with noise or parking issues. I agree that these citizens absolutely have a reason to complain about these "businesses" - but again, the city already has measures in place to take care of the issues being complained about already. they don't need more of my money, thank you.

Take care of the crappy auto business on Wilder St. or any others (auto or non-auto), for that matter - leave mine alone. The city gets nice hefty sales taxes from me - I'm not paying for a $5000 bond and licensing fee and god knows what other un-hashed out fees for un-hashed out parking requirements for undesirables running undesirable, and/or illegitimate "businesses".

Less Goveernment not MORE!

City Council how bout enforcing existing laws before you go and smoke screen the voters in a campaign year to make it look lie you actually DO something.

We don't need these new laws just enforcement of the ones we have.

10:04 TOM are you now posting for yourself ? You must smoke lots of that crack.

Anonymous said...

Please don't bother me...leave me alone. I'm only trying to provide a service to those who need it and I don't need to pay anymore fees, taxes or insurance bonds. Also, expect a large turn out of auto repair/shop owners at the council meeting this week!

You can't just enforce the laws we have - there are too many people working to get around or avoid the law in this city. It's appalling. You have to constantly adjust things just to deal halfway with the mayhem that is caused on a routine basis.

Stephanie Kifowit would be a great Mayor she voted to hurt business in Aurora. She voted for this ordinance without understanding the impact on good long time Aurora businesses.

Good Job Kifowit
Your an idiot

Maybe she should do more bump and grind with the cops at the Phoenix club?

Remember the Prince song Little red Corvette, and what it was about?

"...I guess I must be dumb
cuz u had a pocket full of horses

It should be Stephie's theme song.

Here is the deal. The city is in financial crisis, and the next Mayor is going to be in trouble. Weisner will probably try and clean up any records that may get him convicted. The Democratic machine is in full swing in Aurora right now, which means any run against Weisner is going to be very costly. I would think 150k is the entry point, because the Chicago machine will insure its foot soldiers are out helping out its new little sister city.

My guess is Lawrence had enough sense to see that the next mayor is going to have to raise taxes to cover the spending orgy or cut services and that this would be a very expensive campaign.

Additionally I knew a couple of people who thought about entering various races, but after the last election, they determined this city has gone to the Democrats and the liberals.

Until the citizens of this community start showing up at city council meetings why would anyone care to take this on? The job is a pay-cut for those with talent, and a headache for those who might do it to "give back" in the form of public service. But why should anyone give back when the citizens will not do their duty and ride herd on the city council?
