Sen. Dick Durbin Asks President Bush to Commute Prison Sentence for Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan

Should former Illinois Gov. George Ryan's
prison sentence be commuted by President Bush?

In a letter to President George W. Bush, Sen. Dick Durbin asks for "compassion" in a request to commute the sentence of former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, who is serving a 6.5 year sentence for fraud, racketeering and corruption-related charges.

Durbin says the 74 year old Ryan has suffered enough, nothing would be served by additional prison time and that he has lost his pension and benefits.

Former federal prosecutors argue that it would send the wrong message to the public and elected officials about the consequences of public corruption.

Should Ryan's sentence be commuted?

If President Bush doesn't, will Durbin make the same request after January 20th to President-Elect Barack Obama?

He's only served a year of 6, so I say it's too early. I don't think prison accomplishes anything but corruption is one of the worst crimes you can commit against the public-at-large.

His prison life is like a country club atmosphere. Suffering my ass...HA! How about the 6 kids he was responsible for killing? How about that family's suffering? Ryan never admitted guilt nor ever shown any remorse. Let him rot.

I don't think Bush should commute it for several reasons but it will be interesting to see if Durbin has the courage to put this question to Obama.

Total agreement with 9:11

Another case of a double standard. If that would of have been you or I that did what he did, we would have gotten sixty years instead of six. Just goes to show that people with power and money think they are above the law. Durbin should be committed just for suggesting Ryan's sentence be commuted.

H should just wait and ask his buddy Obama. Illinois politics is so crooked. Obama's ultimate downfall will be surrounding himself with too many Chicagoans who feel kickbacks are a constitutional right.

He's 74. Let him go. He didn't kill 6 kids.

Let him serve the FULL sentence...whatever happened to "justice"?

This is what's wrong with our society now...you do the crime now do the time!

This teaches the lesson nobody wants to enforce (responsibility) for the sake of "compassion"...

I agree with 10:46...if it was "regular" folks..nobody would care.

No pardon.

Look at that picture of him. Doesn't he have the look of someone who's smug and arrogant.

I am concerned about this pardon. I cannot get it out of my mind, (I don't remember her name) but there was a woman who came to warn George Ryan by talking to his wife about the corruption and bribery schemes in the Sec. of State's office. He was not even caring and concerned enough to try to root out the corruption. When the Willis family were killed, he still did nothing but try to cover up the corruption, he went after their lawyer to discredit them. God help this arrogant, bitter man. Commutation should be for those who have a conscience and have remorse about what they did. I do hate to see Mrs. Ryan suffer so much but he didn't even care enough about HER to correct the corruption when she warned him about it and didn't care enough about HER to come clean about the whole mess.

Ryan deserves to die a slow agonizing death. He is the reason children were slaughtered. His mental anguish at not being able to be at his wife's side is appropriate for his corruption betrayed his wife as it did the citizen's of this state. He is a piece of filth that deserves no mercy. My only wish is that Tommy Weisner ends up doing time with him in the near future.

SO whats going through Durbins mind? The same thing that always goes through this ultra left, commmie, stupid, idiotic, self serving Illinois politicians mind....look the other way there are no rules, morals, or laws that apply to them. If Ryan was a baby Durbin could just have him aborted and that would solve his problem. Scumbag Durbin.

Looks like Georgia's senatorial run off yesterday sure is a reflection of racial equality. I bet if the Dem would have been another color he surely would have won. What does this say about the Obama election? Now if Blogo can only find a suitable Black for replacement of Obama as it looks like this is the only meaningful qualification.

Have him trade spots with Blagoevich.

I am apalled that some news sources are calling the Durbin action "heroic and courageous."

If he wanted to be either he would have announced his intentions PRIOR to his re election. Why didn't he? Because he knew how many people would not have voted for him.

I think they should pair O.J. Simpson and George Ryan together as cellmates. They could share alot of stories about fraud, armed robbery, racketeering and murder.

Durbin is just as dumb as the people who vote for him.

As a Democrat I am so proud that I didn't vote for "Cry Baby" Durbin. This latest absurd effort to pardon another political crook just confirms me in my vote.
