Rock This City 2009 | Aurora's Downtown Alive Changes Format and Location

Ready to rock this city in 2009?
OpenlineBlog's interns are looking for music
talent that will get our viewers thunderstruck

Aurora's Downtown Alive festivals during the summer will have two significant changes in 2009, according to Gina Moga, the city's special event department head.

Change - Instead of the usual Friday night gatherings, there will be four weekend gatherings (Friday/Saturday) that will provide eight nights of entertainment.

Change - Instead of Downer Place in downtown Aurora, the festivals will be held on Galena Boulevard.

The four weekend "themes" and their dates are as follows:

  • Blues on the Fox (June 19 and 20)
  • Summer Jam (July 10 and 11); Alternative rock music, bands include Eve 6 and Painkiller Hotel
  • Rock on the Fox (July 31 and August 1); Classic rock music, bands include Foghat and a Dave Matthews tribute band
  • Fan Favorites (August 14 and 15); Bands include American English and The Moods

What music and format would you like for Aurora's Downtown Alive?

What local or global, undiscovered or existing individual or group talent (any genre) should we feature here for our audience in 2009? Let us know inside or at openlineblog@gmail.com.

Political rockstars are welcome to submit their suggestions, too.

We have officially moved our headquarters into a great, new space. We now occupy office space at 425 W. Galena; which is on the corner of Blackhawk and Galena -- across from New England Church. Our banner is up for westbound traffic and soon our other banner will be displayed for eastbound traffic as well. We are very fortunate to find such a wonderful location, with a great landlord, on a tight budget; but it goes to show that there is support for our campaign.

Oh really, this shows support? How did your fund raiser go last night? I understand it was a failure.

A great accomplishment by the kifowit campaign "Our banner is up for westbound traffic and soon our other banner will be displayed for eastbound traffic as well." What's the matter you didn't have enough money to buy two banners at the same time.

Who are these bands anyway? Has anyone ever heard of them? How cheap can you get Aurora. A city that's the 2nd largest in the state and the best you can do is a Dave Mathews tribute band...you should be booking the real Dave Mathews band.

I've heard of all those bands but one. Where have you guys been?

Too bad the Hispanics are still banished to the back of the tracks little festival they have.

Downtown Alive needs some quality bands if they are going to expand.

I'd rather see fewer dates, but better quality.

Weisner should never dance in public.

He is worse than Elaine from Seinfeld.

Ribfest in Naperville is where I go and I live in Aurora. The hell with downtown alive, the downtown is still a hole.

For the first few years Downtown Alive was a great event. We could go there and see many fellow city employees as well as many retired city emplyees. Many of the city's seniors would bring a lawn chair and listen to the music. The number of police officers needed was minimal. Now there are few seniors that go and city emplyees and retirees stay away. The number of cops assigned is at times 30 officers. Groups of young people walk the festivals looking to challenge anyone that gets in their way. The music is geared towards young people. Where is the country western music? Gina, I think have screwed up a good thing.

We gave up on it as well. Lots of dirty people and unattended children.
I'd agree about a country music night. Not that I'm a huge fan, but you'd be covering a large segment of the population that is being ignored.

What a total waste of taxpayer money. Why are we forced to bear this needless expense?

I would love to see how much these stupid festivals cost. Police, set up, medic duty, not to mention clean up, and the fact it blocks traffic...

Get rid of all of it. The 4th of July should be celebrated and that is it.

It is a waste of money, but Aurora has never been afraid of wasting your money!!
Look at your taxes SUCKERS!!!!!!!

They should have a "Country Weekend for the toothless whites that still live in Aurora

LOW QUALITY BANDS????

They are bringing in Eve 6,who have had 8 Top 40 hits

Foghat who has had several Top 40 albums

Plus American English The Premiere Beatles band in the world. They have won awards in Liverpool England and ALWAYS have a HUGE crowd when they preform in Aurora

Yes the quantity of dates has gone down since it started but it always has beed safe even for the kids , which they have had a separate area just for them and it is very safe.

I have not seen any reports of increased crime during the fests have you? If you have lets see them

So then they are wasting more taxpayer money on big name bands. Who cares...if there is any merit in this than people will pay for it and the city should charge for it!!!

This is a waste of money.

Maybe require kids under the age of 18 to be with an adult at all times...I have stopped going since there were so many unsupervised kids between the ages of 13-17, that were completey out of control! No parents are ever around, and they have no respect for anyone. The police do what they can, but cant force them to leave, and get no help for the parents...Sorry..But I think I will be attending RibFest insted this year...Again...

This money would be better spent to investigate just who knew what and when, when the contract was let for the new Radio system for the city. The council is already in denial with Oconnor et al saying they should have been more forewarned than they were. This is just like the last time Aurora bought an outdated system for the old police station knowing full well that is was outdated. They were told upon installation that the equipment wasn't even being made anymore and yet they let the contractor install it anyway only to live through forty years of failures outages and repairs. The problem here is amatures approving something professionals should be approving. The amatures on the council should never have control over this spending and the one who finally approves it should also be responsible for its outcome. If the outcome at any point is bad than adios amigos with no pay.

Thank God, Downtown Alive is a summer event because we would never be able to go in the winter, the way our streets are plowed. When you drive down the street in a city truck with a plow, the objective is to PUT THE PLOW DOWN SO YOU CAN PLOW THE SNOW NOT JUST DRIVE ONER IT.
Tom, get off you're dead ass and check on your crews, or maybe your street hasn't been plowed for two days either.

Just like the computer based reporting system the Police Department bought after being told by a Police Department in Florida to "not buy it!" Lost reports, system failures to name the least of the problems!

Anonymous said...

Get rid of Downtown alive!!! All it is, is a taxpayer funded advertising event for those Condos. the developer should pay for it, not the taxpayer.

Anonymous said...

Where I live the streets have not been plowed in 2 days either. This is UNEXCUSABLE! More snow is expected and we will really not be able to get out at all. Where does one call to get someone out here to plow? What are those plow drivers being paid to ignore us, or is this City ignoring certain streets? Can we get someone to plow and then charge the City for not doing their job?

Why is the city not ticketing and towing all the people parking on the streets? I had to go across town to take my mother to the Doctor and the streets were horrible, in large part because of all the cars.

And why do the police ignore people driving unsafe vehicles. I watched a Mexican who had bald tires create a one car traffic jam, and a cop just sat their and ignored the back-up(in case this is not clear he could not gain traction going up the slight hill on Sullivan Rd heading west from 31. His bald tires were coated with snow and just spun, his vehicle went into the oncoming traffic lane as it repeatedly turned side wise. And the Whole time a cop sat their at Thorton's.

wtf...

How come nobody cares about the hospital deal- the cooperating witness gave Weisner $7500, and strangely a number of sugical centers in Chicago and Indiana gave 10K or was it 5k- Check his reports. Also a lab gave I think $2500.
Sounds very much like the businesses Nayak owns.
Why would outsiders contribute so much to Weisner? The Blago Buddy connection no doubt.
He will be Mayor again, but hearing Saville REALLY wants the Mayor Pro Tem position- his only chance to become Mayor.
Seems he has dropped out of the sleazy, mortgage business he was in.

Anonymous said...

The only way wesiner will be mayor again is if people vote for him. Plain and simple, just do not vote for the man.

Anonymous said...

You cannot be Mayor if you are Mayor Pro Temp. There must be a special election.

Ribfest has become an over priced, over packed, beer soaked field, of a hell hole.

Here is an event I think Aurora. Insane Deuces Vs Latin Kings. Each gang chooses 7 representatives, each of the 7 representatives are paired with a representative form the other gang based on size and weight. they are blind folded and then the left arm of each representative is tied to left arm of the opposing gang member. each is given a knife to hold in their right hand and then they are allowed to slash away! Everyone wins!!!!

The other event would be lawn mower races. We could set up a small obstacle course like a water puddle representing the Rio Grande, Stop and Go signs, and to distract the racers, little blond 9 years old girls, and small dogs. Let's see who can finish the race without raping the girls, raping the dogs, or driving through the Stop and Go sign!!!

I think we should have a most Catholic contest where Mexicans prove their faith in the blessed virgin by slashing themselves with razors and whipping therselves like they do on easter.

I love Downtown Alive! I go every year and have a great time. I see many old friends and enjoy the quality production and music they bring in. I think Aurora is great, with its diversity and beautiful river front setting. The additional festivals are a welcome treat and when the new venue is completed next year, this city will be well on its way to receiving the kind of world class recognition it deserves. And to all you naysayers, quit bitching or get the hell out of my town.

Downtown Alive! is still a fun event. It's a place to run into people one might not otherwise see very often - the small town aspect of Aurora. Still, it would be nice for the event to return to the "something for everyone" nature it had in its early days.

I was reading these comments and I can't believe how selfish and un great full people really are. Aurora is giving people who may not have the money to go and have fun listening to music and letting their children play for free in the kid area. Stop being so racist! The person who had to let us know is was a mexican that was driving the car that had bald tires. Who needs to know what nationality someone is to tell a story. Shame on you and the rest of the people who have nothing better to do than to find fault in everything and everyone. I am sure you are not perfect, and again if you don't like Aurora then move out! Leave I am sure no one will miss you. I personally Like to go and listen to the bands. I don't really like the fact that they sell beer but then again I have yet to see anyone who had caused my family any grief. Just my comment Thanks

I came into town last year, 2008, for the "Down Town Alive" event. Molly Hatchet, Blue Oyster Cult, and UFO. I booked a hotel for 2 nights and had every meal at the local restaurants. (Mostly WP's Round House). I had a GREAT TIME! I will be coming in this year as well to see FOGHAT eventhough the band has only 1 original member, the drummer, but "Lonsome Dave" wrote some great songs and they are keeping his music alive!
See you up front! CBJ
