Election 2009 | Weisner, Lawrence Inauguration for New Terms After Landslide Wins

On Tuesday evening, after Election 2009 landslide victories in April, Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner and Fourth Ward Alderman Rick Lawrence were sworn-in for new terms as part of an inauguration ceremony at Aurora's City Hall.

Weisner easily defeated city council members Richard Irvin and Stephanie Kifowit for Mayor. According to our viewer reports, Irvin was reportedly not present for the city council's Committee-of-the-Whole or for the inauguration ceremony.

Lawrence's 4th Ward had among the highest voter turnout in the City of Aurora and he had two opponents who actively campaigned. He won a 3 way landslide with over 60% of the vote.

If Weisner does not seek another term, Lawrence is considered by most to be the front-runner for a future race for Mayor of Aurora.

Other city council members, including those that did not have opponents or strongly contested elections, were also sworn-in. That includes 4 year terms for Juany Garza (Ward 2), Scheketa Hart-Burns (Ward 7), Leroy Keith (Ward 9), Lynda Elmore (Ward 10), Bob O'Connor (Alderman-at-Large) and for a two year term, Rick Mervine (Ward 8).

Ward 1, Ward 3, Ward 5, Ward 6, Ward 8 and Alderman-at-Large will be open for election in 2011.

Since Garza, Hart-Burns, Keith and Elmore were unopposed, didn't they win by bigger landslides?

Landslides from a poor turnout isn't saying much for either Weisner or Lawrence.
Just show a lot of apathy on the part of Aurorans.

This blog just wants to kiss Lawrence and Weisner's a$$. A landslide is not 60%; that is actually the normal ratio of incumbent to challenger. MOST incumbents get 60% of the vote; and MOST challengers get 40% of the vote.

I agree -- the fact that Garza, Hart-Burns, (not so much Keith because he got his challenger kicked off the ballot) and Elmore are doing such a good job that no one decided to run against them; speaks volumes!!

7:2 - I have told you the answer before. Rick was confident in wrapping up the Alderman race, he also knows the cities financial shape. As a liberal, Lawrence has nto stomach for cutting the welfare checks the city doles out to Hesed House, family services and dozens of other welfare programs, so the only alternative is to raise taxes something he does not want his name associated with. But there is more, once again he knew he had the Alderman race sewn up and yields a very, very lucrative prize in the form of lifetime health insurance. Would you risk lifetime health insurance and a safe seat for a chance at a Mayoral job you may lose and having to raise taxes?

That which I wrote above is your answer.

I believe you are right. I heard that was why Schuler ran a second time. After two terms you can "retire" as an alderman and get retiree health insurance forever for cheap. Lawrence would have been a fool to pass up such a sweet deal.

Big deal about the health insurance. You work you get it at most places. You retire you get medicare and by the time I retire healthcare will be free anyways. Looks like they are the suckers for putting up with a low paying, low class partime headache that takes an inordinate amount of time away from their families.

In a three-way race, getting 60% or higher is definitely a landslide.

The 4th Ward turnout was higher than most other wards, maybe even highest in the city, so for Lawrence, that bodes very well.

I don't remember the exact number between Weisner and Irvin in 2005, but it was in the upper 50's and that was a landslide with just one opponent, so Weisner definitely got a landslide this time with two opponents.

What did wesiner promise lawrence to droped out of the race.

Both Lawrence and Weisner won easily because they weren't running against each other.

Weisner had two opponents who also ran lousy campaigns and are lousy candidates.

Lawrence's victory is important because the 4th ward has got serious voters. He will have a huge advantage if he runs for mayor when Weisner is done after this term.

Keep dreaming 3:48.

11:5 - Lawrence has his own company. Health insurance is very expensive. I do not know if it is a benefit with his company or not. But I have a family of three and ours runs 1346 a month, and understand one important difference. In a group plan, you cannot have your premium raised for using the insurance, you can get in if you have most pre-exisitng conditions, and generally life time caps are not realistically applicable. When you have your own policy that is not true. So it is a big deal, in fact it is a huge deal.

To 3:48 LOL Lawrence We knew you wrote that blog.Kifowit is better than the pay to play weisner

yes 9:17 but isnt Obama suppossed to change all of that with universal healthcare? So in the end we will all have lifetime health coverage.

It is going to be interesting when Obama destroys the best health care system in the world. the law of unintended consequences is going to be interesting to watch unfold. Corporations will quickly regret the decision to get out of the health care business as they best and brightest they currently employ will simply leave them and open up their own boutique consulting firms.

You have to understand the remaining golden handcuff is health care. Once that is removed as an obstacle to self employment the employers will long remember the day their wish came true, as the only people who will seek corporate employment will the trainees who want to develop the skills to start their own firms and the incompetent.

What people forget is these benefits came into existence to compete for labor. Once the same befits are available to the self employed the movers and shakers will make sure they get their piece of the pie and employers will wither pay a steep price for talent or be stuck with the left overs of the job market.

If health benefits are the only things keeping your employees at your company, you deserve to lose those employees.

7:15 - true, but to the best of my knowledge that is what will happen at most Fortune 100 companies. those in the 85k-150k salary range will go freelance.

How does anyone believe that government programs for anything are free? How naïve is that?

When has anything with government ever been free or cheap?

There is a tremendous price to be paid which comes in any combination of higher direct taxes as in the form of income taxes or even indirect taxes in the form of so-called “user fees”, loss of jobs due to government intrusion and added costs, greater regulation and others.

Now of course if you want to include yourself in that group that will end up in the permanent underclass that is being created by the present policies of Washington then maybe it will “free”.

What will you give up to obtain these “free” benefits? Have you ever thought about that?

Are you willing to be part of the permanent underclass of the “United States” that is being created by the policies of the Executive and the statutes and regulations coming out Congress?

Have you no more ambition than to wait in line not unlike the people of the former Soviet Union? Are you willing to give up everything including free will to the “United States”?

It is that willingness that is contributing mightily to the destruction of this nation, thank you very much.

1984 is closer than we know and once achieved it will be almost impossible to remove and take back our lives.

The dictator has already been installed, incompetent though he is, and the house of cards is continuing to be built on poorly qualifing mortgages with the same idiots in charge. Look for another collapse in the near future.

Leonard - it is over. The reality is Obama will legalize the presence of those illegally in this country and see to it that felons regain their voting rights. Face it around 50% of the country claims they pay the right amount of tax, while 52% do not pay any Federal tax at all. It is over, we surrendered this country without a fight! We allowed third world immigrants to steal from us, destroy our national heritage, eliminate the culture of success this nation's greatness was predicated upon, and now cater to and encourage a culture of failure. At least the American Indians fought and went down with a fight. They lost to better armed opponents and disease. In our case, this nation lay down like a bunch of wimps and became the female dogs to a bunch of third world riff raff.

Sorry to say but it is over. You have seen the zenith of the United States of America.

I wish I was wrong, but the socialist control the schools and people do not love their children enough to take care of them and instead turn them over to the public indoctrination centers.

Sad, real sad...
