A rally was held outside one of the two companies that has most of the contracts in Illinois for red-light cameras.
Opponents of red-light cameras gathered in front of Red Speed's offices in Lombard on Tuesday night.
Illinois State Sen. Dan Duffy is introducing legislation to ban the cameras. Previously, legislation was passed to allow it.
Current Illinois State Senate President John Cullerton, who received thousands in campaign contributions from those who would benefit from the legislation, helped pushed the original legislation through to allow the cameras.
A grassroots movement to eliminate red-light cameras is picking up steam.

Aurora is doing this for the money, not safety.
Problem: It costs more than it brings in.
Another stupid move by our city.
If Aurora cared about public safety they would have slated the streets and plowed last winter. remember that fiasco? Accidents all over the place. Where was the concern for public safety then?
"Scheme' is a good word for the red-light camera revenue generator. Anybody who says it's for safety reasons is a professional bull**** artist.
Who exactly are the geniuses at APD that thought these red-light cameras were a good idea? The same ones who are sticking us with a $120,000,000 Police Taj Mahal? The same ones who want to lay off 71 police officers? Where in hell is the OUTRAGE?!
I challenge Openlineblog to root out these clowns and expose them to the public ridicule they so richly deserve.
I challenge Openlineblog to root out these clowns and expose them to the public...
Don't make me laugh. They can't even scoop a news story.
Red light cameras are a joke....they're installed as revenue generators. The Mayor of Arlington Heights finally saw the light after public outcry and had them removed. Aurora should do the same.
What's with this city? They treat Aurorans like the enemy.
The Mayor of Arlington Heights finally saw the light after public outcry and had them removed.
It wasn't Arlington Heights, it was Schaumburg. And why were the lights removed. Because Woodfield Shopping Center screamed of losing business. The taxes Schaumburg collects from Woodfield far outweighs any red light fees. Money talks.
Joe Groom was the genius who proposed the red light cameras for Aurora. As to the layoffs of the police officers, Weisner claims he never asked for this, but everyone at APD knew about it. Draw your own conclusions, is Weisner a liar or not?
Joe Groom. Is that the same guy who skipped over a bunch of people on a promotional list to make his own wife a sergeant? I wonder how all that is working out?
DONT RUN THE RED LIGHT AND YOU WONT GET A TICKET!!!! ITS THAT SIMPLE!!
If everybody obeys the red lights then the city will be paying money for nothing.
Check Bowling Brook. A few years back they installed lights. People were issued citations for turning right on red and the uproar caused the mayor to halt the lights, at least temporarily.
The real winner here is the red light providers. Someone probably knows better than I but I recall the monthly fee to be several hundred thousand dollars per light possibly $1 million.
Do not kid yourself. This is nothing more than a tax. A source of revenue.
This is not about running red lights. Even if you do not run the light but stop forward of the line in the street such that your bumper can be seen as extending over that line you will be cited.
The stop might be perfectly legal in all respects, but if your bumper is measurably over that line you pay.
It is very simple folks... Dont run the red light and you will not have a problem. I lost a close friend a few years ago because someone ran a red light. I support the programs all the way!!
Did you mean Bolingbrook Leonard?
Wesiner sucks. Aurora sucks. This blog sucks.
But you know what ? You voted for him, you still live here, and you still read this blog.
So shut up already.
Wesiner sucks. Aurora sucks. This blog sucks.
But most of all, you suck.
and swallows!
Proof reading can be dangerous if not done well. "Bowling" (sp)/
Bolingbrook it is.
Joe Groom? Is that the same guy who shot himself in the foot....Twice?
Come on guys. All you're trying to do is break up Tommy's newest money making scheme. How mean spirited, and selfish.
Leonard, this is not an automatic citation machine. Cops review every video and picture it takes before a citation is sent out. If your stop is "perfectly legal in all respects," you won't get a ticket.
Yea - reviewed that wastes more resources that should quit acting as meter maids and be fighting real crime in this town like drugs and gangs. The residents here are so ignorant it's disgusting. Also if you get a ticket in error it's the same as our judicial system - guilty until proven innocent, they're hoping you pay the $100 and move on as it won't be worth the time and effort to fight it. Just revenue creation at our expense. Wake up.
It would be great to have pissed off citizens take a few swings of a baseball bat to the cameras.
Check the Bolingbrook situation. When you pull up to a light and pull up to be able to see to the left so as to make a right turn on red which, by the way, is legal why were people in Bolingbrook being ticketed? A police officer reviewing traffic photos means nothing and does not insure accuracy or legality. All it does is cover the back side of the city. There is no discretion in any of this that is the point. An officer on the street can exercise discretion in each situation, that is removed from the equation.
Leonard hit it on the head - these are being challenged in court on grounds of being unconstitutional and the citizens have been successful in getting judges to throw them out. Again that is if they are challenged and residents want to deal with the time and effort to do it.
