Superhero | Michael Jordan Soars to NBA Hall of Fame

There are few people in recent history who have transcended sports like Michael Jordan, but his basketball skills were exceeded by his will to succeed and carry everyone with him.

Congratulations to Michael Jordan for being inducted to the NBA Hall of Fame today. For the Chicago area and many around the world, he was the closest thing to a real-life superhero.

After all, he could fly...

Weisner fundraiser not happening

September 12, 2009

AURORA -- Joe Vantreese wants you to know that he won't be hosting a fundraiser for Mayor Tom Weisner at his sales office on Sunday.

"I won't even be here," the River Street Plaza developer said. "There is no fundraiser here. There is no event at my office."

You can forgive Vantreese for feeling a little frustrated. After all, a flier announcing that fundraiser has been circulating for at least a week, among Democrats and supporters of Weisner.

The flier invites those supporters to come to the River Plaza (sic) Sales Office at 100 S. River St. to enjoy Sunday night's game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers.

One local Democrat said the flier appeared in his mailbox, in an envelope marked "Friends of Tom Weisner." And the flier itself, peddling $100 tickets to the event, reads "Paid for by Friends of Tom Weisner."

Weisner could not be reached to confirm whether such a fundraiser ever existed, or whether his campaign paid for the fliers. But Dick Hawks, who helped run Weisner's recent re-election campaign, said he wasn't involved with the flier, or any fundraiser.

Hawks said he remembered getting a flier for the event, but wasn't certain. He said he was otherwise occupied on Sunday night.

"If it was an official event, I'd probably know about it and would probably attend," he said.

If there is a Weisner fundraiser in the works, it is most likely to help the mayor pay back Hawks. In April, Hawks loaned the Weisner campaign $50,000, and he said Friday he has not been paid back.

That loan remained the only outstanding debt when the campaign filed its semi-annual report in July.

According to that report, the campaign had $3,854 in available cash

Why would this be in the paper? Just put a note on the door. Vantresse trying to get some publicity in the paper -- similar to his buddy Lawrence.
