Penn State Fires Legendary Football Coach Joe Paterno and University President

As the sex-abuse scandal involving allegations of a former coach at Penn State swirled into a national debate, the Board of Trustees decided to ignore head coach Joe Paterno's statement that he would retire at the end of the season and instead terminated him last night.  In addition, the board also terminated the university president.

firing Paterno was the right thing to do. he should have stepped down.

Yeah, but they didn't fire the grad assistant (now an assistant coach) who actually witnessed the assault and didn't do anything to stop it. All he did was run to report it to Paterno. Who followed University protocol and reported it to the AD. Basically, everyone in the chain of inaction here, starting w/ that GA, and ending w/ the entire board of trustees, should be fired and prosecuted. For that matter, doesn't the Governor appoint the Board of Trustees? So the buck ultimately stops w/ him.

The grad assistant (now a coach) kept his job because he is the witness who told the truth to the grand jury. The "key witness" usually saves their job.

The current Penn. Governor was the Attorney General before being elected Governor. As the AG he began the investigation that resulted in Sandusky's indictment. As Governor, he sits on the Penn State board of trustees and insisted that the Board fire Paterno and the University President.

At Penn State, like many universities, the football program was untouchable and the scandal was swept under the rug. Paterno closed his eyes to the rape of a 10 year old boy by someone connected to his football program. He got what he deserved.

Universities should be about education not football.
The world is turned upside down as universities are measured by their sports teams not their academic accomplishments.

You must be new to Openline. He FREQUENTLY removes posts that make good, valid points contrary to the slanted, one-sided view (i.e. his personal opinions) that he's pushing. And he doesn't have the guts to put a notice up when he does remove a comment (he's only put such a notice once in all the years of this blog). He doesn't remove posts for obscene, defamatory, personal comments and attacks. He prefers those.

stop hiring fags and letting them have free run in the locker rooms! Leave them in the senate where they belong!

Would you be refering to HOUSING CRASH FRANK?

Yep!

12:30 I assume you're talking about homosexuals with the deliberate use of the offensive word "fags". Unfortunately thru your ignorance (possibly deliberate) you're confusion 2 separate issues. Pedophilia is different than homosexuality. Pedophilia is about the age of the victim, and the power the adult perpetrator feels by acting on his impulses. Homosexuality is consenting adults who feel attracted to other consenting adults of the same gender. The truth is that an openly gay adult is statistically far less likely to be a pedophile than an openly straight adult. So to protect kids you're actually safer hiring an openly gay man.

Thanks professor, they're waiting for you on the butt dart range...

Not a professor, just someone telling the truth. And while I have no interest in joining you on that range of yours, what is your address in case someone else reading is interested. I bet you're a great shot. Or maybe you prefer to be the target.

Sometimes truth like beauty is in the eye of the beholder....you know like what the meaning of is is. Its how the liberals skate around the real truth. Face it this preditor is a queer looking for young boys.

Exactly!

6:22 am I think your statements are aimed at me, but you're the one skating around the truth. Everything I've said on here is true, it's just that YOU don't care about truth, you just care about your own biases. And one of your biasis is that anyone who speaks a truth you don't like is a "liberal". It's not that easy. I'm not a liberal OR a conservative. I'm an independent, someone who actually thinks for himself. A concept you probably have trouble with. MY point is in basic agreement w/ you -- this individual is a pedophile and a predator who needs to be taken off the street. And we need to look at this case to see what was missed earlier, and how we can avoid missing it in the future. And constantly reverting to a stereotypic profile which has clearly been shown ineffective in protecting our youth is HELPING, not hurting, the pedophiles. Boy Scouts doesn't allow homosexuals to be leaders, Catholic church doesn't allow homosexuals to be priests, but both have regularly been discovered to have pedophiles serving in those roles (and not just in the past, it keeps happening).
