Penn State Football Coach Joe Paterno Announces He Will Retire Amid Child-Abuse Scandal of Former Assistant Coach

Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno released the following statement in announcing his retirement:

I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.

I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.

That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.

This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.

My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this University.

Paterno had a great career, but he goes out under a cloud of scandal because in a time of moral crisis he failed to act decisively.

What a sad situation for all.

He goes out under a cloud because he followed University policy and did what he was supposed to do. Unfortunately those above didn't do what THEY were supposed to do. And maybe none of this would be going on if the graduate assistant did what he was morally (although probably not legally) required to do -- instead of running off to tell Paterno, he should have stepped up and yelled "hey, what the heck do you think you're doing!" I think the mandatory reporter laws should be changed so that EVERYONE is required to report any possible case of child abuse, not just teachers, etc. The policy at the University needs to be changed so that the witness (the grad assistant) would be required to go straight to the police, NOT to his superior. The same for Joe if he was the witness.

I'm waiting for Openline to tell us how this is all Kifowit's fault.

And how Lawrence has been fighting against Penn State for years, and is the one who actually brought this all out into the light. He was probably foreman of the grand jury.

So tell me again how these perverted queers don't want to indoctrinate your kids.

You're mixing 2 completely different subjects here. Pedophiles may be trying to indoctrinate, but their primary goal is to just control and get their own perverted pleasure. Their focus is the age of the victim.

"Queers" is a commonly used offensive term for homosexuals, which is a completely different topic from pedophilia. Homosexuals are led to form relationships w/ consenting adults of their own gender, generally because they're just hard-wired that way. An openly gay man is by far statistically less likely to be a pedophile than an openly heterosexual man. And homosexuals aren't out to indoctrinate or recruit; if everyone was willing to just let people be who they are, there'd be enough homosexuals to form committed relationships with each other. They are what they are, and allowing two adult men (or women) to form a committed relationship w/ each other doesn't threaten my marriage, or anyone elses, in the least.

Sounds like the mantra of someone trying to promote more abuse to me. Just like all librals confuse, deny, and then justify with false statements. The guy is a dangerous HOMO and PERVERT period.

And you sound like someone who can't handle the truth if it disagrees with what you believe. Anytime you use the word "all", YOU are trying to "confuse, deny, and then justify with false statements". My statements were true. Yours were false. Of course, your attempt to smear me starts from a false premise; I'm not a "libral" or a liberal or a conservative. I'm an independant who objectively looks at both sides of an issue without filtering everything thru an ideological lense, then makes an INFORMED, objective, rational decision. Something I doubt you're capable of. And I'm not trying to promote abuse, I'm trying to prevent it. Those who are promoting abuse are those like you who refuse to study and understand the issue, because otherwise the TRULY dangerous ones will slip thru because your flawed profiling has us looking in the wrong place at the wrong people.

The guy is a dangerous HOMO and PERVERT period.

I don't know if he's a homo or not, just like I don't know about you. But while we have to wait for the court system to make its ruling (innocent until proven guilty), I'm pretty sure at this point he is a pedophile, and do agree w/ you that he is a pervert and should be locked up.
