West Aurora Property Owners Likely to Face Tax Increase to Fund Schools

If you are a taxpayer on the west side of Aurora or within West Aurora School District 129 already not-so-happy about the various tax and fee increases by the City of Aurora, State of Illinois, Fox Valley Park District, Illinois Tollway, Metra and everything in between, this won't make you feel better.

Due to fiscal pressures, West Aurora School District 129 says they are seeking a levy from Kane County that would increase the average property owner's taxes about $277 to $2,746 for a $210,000 home.

The levy would be for a total of $68 million for 2011, an increase from $61 million in 2010, assuming they get the full request.

Unlike most other government entities, West Aurora School District has been taking aggressive steps for a financial reduction plan to cut spending, costs and find ways to save money.

However, it's not enough because labor costs, including the associated benefits, remain high and teacher unions continue to pressure for salary increases.

Some say that while funding schools is important, this once again raises two critical issues that must be resolved...how schools are funded and dealing head-on with the public pension system.

In the meantime, taxpayers are being asked to pay more.

teacher unions must make big changes first!

Yeah, real agressive in fund raising for a million dollar football field. Haven't seen anything near that kind of agression in raising money for academic pursuits, have you?

Looks like the EVIL GREEDY TEACHERS UNIONS are at it again. And the voting dolts in OHIO and WISCONSIN want to join them. I'm sure they will come out with a slick 10 page hand out telling you how its all for the "children". Trouble is they don't say whose children. Fire them all, teachers, administration anyone connected and start over with sensible salaries. Above all get rid of that stupid bus service and make the parents responsible for getting their kids to school.

I agree with 3:22. The district shoved the artificial turf field done our throats. Supposedly paid for completely with donations. Actually, donations did not cover over half a million of the costs, taxpayers did. But the district is sure that the donations will continue to come in to cover the remainder. It's not like the athletic teams at West produce Division I athletes on a regular basis, so why waste our money on crap like this instead of books, computers, things that actually might help our children compete in the world for jobs.

10:56, this is 3:22. Thinking about it, though, to be fair I should have included the public in my "disappointment". The district should be blasted for not even trying to put that much effort into fundraising for academics. But the public should be blasted because, in reality, even if the district had TRIED, the public wouldn't have given for academics. I mean, even in your own post you showed a little of the attitude that athletics is so important when you said "It's not like the athletic teams at West produce Division I athletes on a regular basis". That's like saying the cost of the field would be okay if we DID produce a bunch of D1 athletes, which I disagree with.

Yeah ! Let's all pay more taxes for a dual school system.

What do you think it costs to have a bi-lingual program forever??

Unless there are still large numbers of Illegals coming, these children should be able to speak English by now.

GO OHIO !!

The school board has Ormond on it so what do you expect. He is a spoiled liberal executive. But the idiots on the West side keep voting liberals onto the school board and city council. That is why taxes keep going up.

Anonymous said...

Taxes always go up, no matter who we elect. The only difference between liberals and conservatives is what they spend the money on. They both spend.

Lets get a catering company that has SEIU union employees to feed the kids. They like to promote brekfast, lunch and dinner {for the kids" to keep their employees paying dues and supporting the DEMOCRATIC PARTY. THis is what happened in CHICAGO after SEIU, the dept of ed and MOOCHELLE all met under the guise of helping the children.Ah your taxes at work supporting socialism.

Anonymous said...

Hear the one about SEIU skimming their dues from the parents of handicaped children. SEIU convinced the state of MICHIGAN that these parents were caretakers and now collect 30 dollars per month "union dues" out of the parents medicaid payments. They collect it directly from the state even though the parents never signed up to be in the unnion. Some CHANGE YOUR ALL HAVE GOTTEN YOURSELF INTO baby. Look for this communist BS at a state near you soon.

6:14 got a citation to a credible source about that one? That clearly sounds like something somebody of a certain political bent made up to stir things up. I don't believe it.

8:59 - the 6:14 posting is correct. They tried fro the same thing in IL not to long ago.

This is 8:59. Now that someone provided an actual citation, I agree it's ridiculous to be hitting them w/ union dues. Of course it's also a shame that the parents have to be paid to take care of their own children. I sure hope they're paying income tax on those wages they're getting.

Anonymous said...

Is not medicaid medical payments. Would this not go to doctors who for the bills from them?

Anonymous said...

Well how about charging some fees like for parking? Cut teacher's salaries by 15% and all administrators by 35% and the superintendent by 75%. Make all extracurricular activities fee only, and include any instructors salaries. Driver's ed should be eliminated and let the private sector pick up the slack with driving school.

They should look at e-books and inexpensive readers for primary materials and offer a 50% voucher for every parent willing to withdraw their children and send them to private schools or home school.

Anonymous said...

8:59 Now follow this closely. The parents are not being paid anything for their children's care. The medicaid payments are paid to the actual provider for drugs equipment etc. The parents are merely classified as caregivers so the state pays the union dues directly to SEIU which I believe averages 30 dollars per person on medicaid in this case 60 dollars because they have two children with CP. The scam comes from the direct payments to the unions. A couple of years ago Michigan had another simular case that involved home based workers in which they were automatically considered union employees and required to pay union dues. At that time there was a woman governor also DEMOCRATIC. This is what the EVIL UNOINS are all about. So if you ever see anyone running around AURORA with a SEIU logo on their shirt or jacket you can be that they are supporting the DEMOCRATIC party through their union dues. ITS A SCAM.

Anonymous said...

PS to the above. I believe the total payments from MICHIGAN to the SEIU for this scam alone total around 6 million dollars....and this is just one state and one scam. This is why this economy cannot grow with all the theft going on. I doubt you will see anything about this in the local papers or on the local news as they are all too libral.

Uh, 6:06, now YOU follow this closely. Our neighbor's son gets $300 per month from medicaid to act as a caregiver for his father. This is above and beyond the money medicaid pays for dad's doctors, medicines, dialysis, etc. It's obviously not enough to replace a full time job, BUT he IS getting part-time wages from the state for the part-time job of taking care of his father. I believe he's the one getting the money because the spouse of the medicaid recipient is not eligible to receive this money. But they all live in the same house, anyway. I will say dad has legitimate medical needs, and despite all his years of working hard before he got sick, their financial situation is pretty tight.

Anonymous said...

Oh, 6:11, you're wrong about one thing. This economy not only CAN grow, it actually is, just not nearly fast enough. If the economy is so bad, where did all the fat cats and corporations get the trillions of dollars they're sitting on, or spending on luxury items, while the average worker and middle class takes it on the chin? This situation of considering these caregivers as state employees, and therefore expected to join the union, is dead wrong. But it's not why the economy is in the shape it's in. If they do what they should and cut out the union from this situation, that won't reduce the deficit one penny. That money will just all go to the caregivers. Maybe that will put more money into the economy, but it's still government money. And your kind doesn't like stimulus money, does it?

I wonder if D129 checks the credit cards that the administrators have and what they use it for? In D131 ours use theirs to go to Baydole, get cheesecakes, meeting snacks and they pay for the employees families to go with them to conferences. It is said that they have a big food budget and they really like Jimmy Johns, Panera Bread and like having retreats at Fox Valley Park District does D129 do this also because if they do they need to stop it before they ask for more money.

Remember Ryland makes over $300,000 and his contract was never voted on in public Herget, Woods, Ormond,Smith and Bradford voted on it that is why we are in bad shape because of these morons. Time to clean house \

Ryland also will get 2 pensions when he retires in 2014 one from Washington and one from Illinois

I work in another school district, and have been issued a purchasing card. It's sort of a hybrid credit/debit card. I have to submit a monthly report, with itemized receipts, to justify every penny I spend. I have a monthly limit; if I charge over that, the card gets declined. The school has these because it actually saves the school money (when they're used properly) over the process of submitting a purchase order request, which takes more paperwork, more administrative time to process, and you can't buy things over the internet at lower prices. So in our district at least, these cards are a good thing.

Anonymous said...

The only thing the stimulus bills have stimulated
is crooks and their thievery. To the tune of trillions of dollars.

Anonymous said...

If it is true that the contract wasn't voted on in public you can contact the States Attorney because by law it has too be voted on in public. But in looking at past board minutes it looks like they did vote on it in a special meeting.

The credit cards are proably a good thing f what you state but when they are not check like yours are then it becomes a problem.

3:22, it's 10:56. I apparently was not clear regarding the use of tax dollars for the artificial turf at West. Even if we had Division I athletes, I would not support the expenditure. I was making the point that we don't even have that level of players, so the expenditure is doubly ridiculous. You are right about most parents not supporting an expenditure for education. Rick Lawrence wouldn't be able to put up an awning and get megapublicity for doing so if we were using the money to improve educational tools. But hey, it kept his daughter on the cheerleading squad.

They did vote in a Special Session at noon before Christmas break if Ormond was so honest why not put it on a normal agenda and vote on it in public. I work for East Aurora and I do not support Roberts but at least the East Aurora Board voted in public and all explained why they renewed his contract. He only makes $200,000 what a joke only but at least it is not $300,000. Annie Thompson is a new member and a voice of one the residents need to support her. As tax payers in d129 Herget and Ormond need to go that will be start.

Anonymous said...

I do believe that Special Session was open to the public. Again all voting for things like this are required by law to be voted on in open session so if anyone has a complaint report it.

Anonymous said...

why are we paying close to 200k for a glorified school principal. I would 100k would be more than enough given the results they have delivered.

Anonymous said...

My point Ryland is at $292000
Roberts at $253,000. Roberts has no financial problems Ryland has raised our tax rates 3 times Roberts once. Ryland also pays a fundraiser out of district funds that is how the District got money for the turf. Would we have not been better to put it towards education.

Anonymous said...

Kathy Birkett for d204's total package is 250,000 and she produces results d129 is only a slight step above 131 seems like both boards have a lot of explaining to do. Pension is another way of providing additional salary with out the appearance of paying big salaries but the truth is the tax payer is still on the hook

Anonymous said...

Why do we still have bi-lingual programs?

Anonymous said...

Roberts doesn't watch how the administration uses their credit cards. Last November at The Title I Conference they had a party for out going Wells at a nice restaurant. There are still questions if Clayton the PR person uses district money for his group. As far as raising taxes they are spending money like there is no end while other district aren't getting money from the State but they do. Remember you also pay for D131 misuse of money. What D131 didn't say is they get their money from the state on time so they really didn't need a referendum. Does D129 let their administrators go for retreats at Country Clubs D131 does. Does D129 have Christmas Parties for the administration? How many times does your administration get food from Jimmy Johns or have a working lunch for one. From what I hear D131 is one step from having the State take them over because of how many years they have been on AYP.

Anonymous said...

If you have proof that Ryland also pays a fundraiser out of district funds that is how the District got money for the turf. You can contact the district attorney because that is against the IL School Code.

Anonymous said...

Rumor has it that D131 will try again for a property increase at the next election I guess they don't have enough money from the State and other taxpayers for their eating expenses.

Anonymous said...

Yes Roberts does get an annuity.

Anonymous said...

If he does get an annuity it should be posted on the website with his salary as required by law but again this district feels they are above that.

Does D129 go to the ISAB Conference this weekend and do they stay overnight for the three days?
