Election 2013 Aurora Ward 4 - Jay Leonardi Trails By 7 Votes for General Election Spot; Residents Say They Will Focus on Electing Rick Lawrence Alderman-at-Large

On Tuesday, the Aurora Election Commission counted the remaining votes from the primary for the 4th Ward race.

After the tally, Jay Leonardi trailed by only 7 votes.

He has until March 24 to decide if he wants to pursue a recount, but in lieu of that, voters would be left with a choice between what most are calling "dumb or dumber" between Mavis Bates and Bill Donnell, both who have supported wild spending and would act as rubber-stamps for Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner's schemes.

But, many 4th Ward residents (old and new boundaries), say they will vote for neither Bates or Donnell, but instead focus on their current 4th Ward Alderman Rick Lawrence, who is running for Alderman-at-Large.

"It's very simple.  Rick has done an outstanding job as 4th Ward Alderman.  Even those that may not agree on every issue recognize he's been the most effective alderman in recent history and solved real issues.  He will continue to be our Alderman as Alderman-at-Large so that's the focus now if we want to prevent a disaster and make sure taxpayers are represented on the city council." said a resident of one of the many neighborhood groups that are active in the 4th Ward.

Lawrence says that if he were elected Alderman-at-Large, he would continue to serve the taxpayers of what was the old 4th Ward as well as the new portion, but that he would solve issues across the city for all wards and all taxpayers.

Meanwhile, Jay Leonardi says  he will decide soon on the recount, but that with or without being a candidate, he intends to be involved and find solutions to the serious problems for Aurora's future.

"Jay Leonardi is a great guy with a very bright future...we haven't heard the last of him" said former Alderman Marc Roberts.

Mayor Weisner has become increasingly upset in recent weeks and panicked at the idea that anyone could join Rick Lawrence to offer an independent voice and protect taxpayers, so he's tried to manipulate each and every race, threaten and intimidate candidates.

Weisner and his campaign goons are pouring resources to try and keep the old-guard Bob O'Connor in office as a useless alderman-at-large since he has been a rubber-stamp and conduit for the wild spending and corruption that goes through the finance committee.

"Make no mistake, even though Weisner has no opponent, he's the campaign manager for Bob O'Connor and desperate to try and prevent Rick Lawrence from occupying the seat next to the mayor" said a viewer.

"But, Weisner is screwed either way.  If Rick Lawrence is elected Alderman-at-Large, he's going to be effective citywide.  If he's not, he's going to be unplugged from having to sit with those zombies and taxpayers will still listen to him over anything the mayor says."

The general election is April 9th.

This piece obviously written by the Rick Lawrence Campaign Machine. The usual un-sourced quotes. "Many 4th Ward residents" will vote for him. But probably not enough for him to win even the 4th. "he's been the most effective alderman in recent history and solved real issues". Not according to a number of your commenters on various posts (or have you deleted those comments?).

Beware of the Openline Curse. Every candidate recommended by openline in the February Primary LOST. Lawrence should be nervous about his future as the openline cloud hangs over his head,

The people are speaking in open, free elections and openline is losing big.

Yeah, right open line

Gee, I'm sure Pat Fee was really happy to have Openline's endorsement.

I predict the lowest turnout ever come April 9th, and the new number will set the course for future 4th Ward elections.

The mayor has successfully transformed the most influential Ward in the city with the highest voter turnout rate into yet another ward where a handful of voters define the policy the other 20 thousand live under.

"Meanwhile, Jay Leonardi says he will decide soon on the recount, but that with or without being a candidate, he intends to be involved and find solutions to the serious problems for Aurora's future"...

after he asks his mom and dad if that's OK.

The way you can tell Jay Leonardi is still a child is he think Aurora has a future.

Openline --- King maker in Aurora elections. Titan of the campaign trail. Followed by millions of faithful believers. Fount of all things powerful and mighty......

Possessor of long coat tails. Ridden by .....

Coat tails? The only tails I see look like strands of TP from the bottoms of pant legs extending down the sidewalk. Yikes!!!!

I will not be voting for Bates or Donnell!

As a 4th ward resident - yeah, no one says that. Mr. Lawrence certainly has a constituency, but no one is really lamenting him leaving. Except Marc Roberts and his naked self pictures. Google him, it's fun stuff.

Is it wrong?

I think it's a damn shame that all you see in Jay Leonardi is his age, that is just plane ignorance on your part! What were you doing at 19-20, I guarantee it wasn't trying to change a city! Also, it's because of people like you, thinking Aurora has no hope, that Aurora is the way it is...stuck in an ignorance rut! Pull your heads out your butts & talk about facts, not childish things!

Aurora has hope only if they start to elect people like Jay Leonardi. Aurora did not elect him so hope is fading.

There are 10 City Wards and 10 Aldermen. There are 2 Aldrmen at Large. Alderman Lawrence is the only 1 that has spoken out and asked tough questions at
City Council. Once or twice a very few of the other Aldermen have joined him but that is the exception and not the rule. 1 of 12. Note there is no Aldermanic vetoe here.
Apparently, this is soooo threatening that such dissent must be put down in the strongest fashion and by any means.
Think about this!
We have one person rule in this City and it is not the Lone Ranger 4th Ward Alderman.
Looks very similar to forms of government where people lose all there rights. Not a pretty picture.

and taxpayers will still listen to him over anything the mayor says

I doubt they will listen, unless you mean he will start to hold court with a small bunch of washed up former wannabe mover and shakers in a coffee clutch at Harner’s and delude himself into thinking he is still relevant. There seems to be a lot of that there.

More likely people will notice that Rick is apparently not campaigning or running against O’Connor and think he is just looking for a way out. People are already murmuring that Lawrence’s reluctance to endorsed one of the 4th Ward candidates or tipped his hat to a successor is the reason Donnell is now going to be alderman.

People who worked behind the scenes to clear the path and remove other people from running for the at large slot against O’Connor in order to give Rick a good shot are now taking heat for it as Rick does not seem to be doing anything.

Rick had a good run. He made a temporary difference but because he would not pick and back a successor Jericho Circle will be rebuilt and his greatest triumph will be undone. He also leaves behind a horrible legacy of tax increases and unrelenting allegiance to a dysfunctional school district. Many of us still remember it was Rick who pushed through that whopping tax increase in district 129.

If Rick would have gotten behind someone to continue the positive work he started he may have actually really put his mark on this community. As it is, he will soon be forgotten about and become as well regarded as that old fool Cutter who wanders around the 4th and still thinks he is someone and is somehow still relevant.

You want facts about Jay – sure here are some.

The issue is relevant experience. Working for daddy, having grandpa intimidate people behind the scenes to push your campaign along and being born with a silver spoon in your mouth is not exactly relevant experience. Is daddy and gramps going to continue to advise him, then why are they not running? Frankly the whole set-up sickened me. They let they kid run around thinking he was making the moves and calling the shots while behind the scene gramps was bullying, intimidating, using connections moving the kid ahead. I sincerely doubt Jay even was aware that it was not him, but rather the extended family and their connections putting him in office.

On Jay Leonardi, there was no substance. He is a kid who sounded good on the surface but when you asked him question he fell apart. Anyone who was going to vote for a 19 year old kid deserves the government they get.

It is amazing that most of the posts here are anything but thoughtful or intelligent. Most of this is amounts to personal attacks directed toward people who have opposing positions on how government should function.
It is designed to produce emotional responses. Act on emotion and you clearly get what you deserve.
As for Jay Leonardi, this is a bright, intelligent and kind young man who thought that government was open to all and was willing to step forward on his own. Instead of vilifying him, this is the type of young person the community needs to encourage and support. He had that support and with 8 more votes he might have had a voice beyond April
Does another opposing voice threaten? Even a young,,inexperienced voice? Better that than the sound of silence that pervades City we

Really his gramps bullied people behind the scenes!??? You're speaking of my father here & instead of you writing some non truths why not get the facts!!! You have no idea...NONE of us were born with silver spoons, we worked for what we have ALL OF US!!!

Anonymous said...

Also, Jay was VERY aware of his campaign seeing it was HIS!! Are you just jealous, or is it that your just plain ignorant! Our family has what we have because of our work ethic & morals! Please tell me at 19-20 what you were doing, bc I guarantee it was not trying to make your city any better!!! So next time you want to speak your "facts" I'd get them straight!

Your right I was not arrogant enough to run for alderman at the age of 19 so I could feed my ego. When I was 18 I was in this real fun place called Vietnam, it was a good time. A lot of fun was had by all who were there, maybe you heard of it? By the time I was 19 I had seen the back of one 18 year olds head blown off, a 19 year old who was gut shot and died a long slow death, and another who lost his lower half and took abut 40 minutes to bleed to death as we could not get to him.

Forgive me if I am not impressed by some spoiled kid who wants to play grown up and who has seen little of life and thinks he should run for office based on daddy and grandpa’s last name. It is a real shame anyone in this community even considered a kid for a second. No wonder we have what we have in office. The voters are obviously idiots and anyone who consider a kid is a double idiot.

And you have blinders on if you don’t think grand pappy was squeezing peoples testicle to get them to help the kid. Grow up. Part of becoming an adult is realizing dad, who can always be your childhood hero, was but a man and had flaws like all men. If you can’t see the obvious maybe it is no wonder you think a 19 year old is a man, because you haven’t grown up yourself.

Hmmm, so you think the younger generation is okay to be sent off to die for our country, but not qualified to have any part in running it? Seems to me the city's pretty FUBARRED after having been run by the old geezers like you and me for years, maybe it's time to get some new young and energetic blood in there.

You are right the voters in the 4th ward are idiots. They kept voting for "I'm afraid to run for Mayor" Lawrence.

Where would Rick or any non-bought person get the money to run against Madigan's machine in Aurora?

The big time Democrats moved in the Aurora and put Weisner in office, showed their muscle against Pat Fee and Peter Hurtado (who tried to out Democrat the Democrats).

Anyone watching this, in the know, gets what has happened.

The election in the 4th was another demonstration of control and power.

The people in this town do not care.

Interesting. I know that Openline has now latched on to Madigan being the great Satan and responsible for everything that's ever gone wrong anywhere in the world, but I don't recall that being discussed here or anywhere when Weisner was running. I definitely don't remember any discussion of Madigan the year Lawrence declared for mayor, got a bunch of people looking forward to voting for him (including me), then RAN AWAY.

Probably a lot smarter than Peters who has never held a real job in his life. Also a lot smarter than most of the people involved with city government.

Hey 3/16/13, 4:00 PM, I lost a sock in the laundry last week. I bet that was Madigan! Hey Openline, you should call on the BGA to investigate and bring in the new U.S. attorney to get to the bottom of that! Just think how many socks get lost over the course of a year in Illinois! Madigan must have a warehouse somewhere to store them all!
