Aurora Police Commander Joe Groom Dies Suddenly
Aurora Police Commander Joe Groom died suddenly the morning of December 9th at age 50.
No official information has been provided on the cause of death, at this time.
Mr. Groom's career with the APD began in 1989 after attending Marmion for high school and getting as associates degree in criminal justice from Waubonsee Community College.
"The loss of Commander Joe Groom is devastating to the entire city, the law enforcement profession and to the men and women of the Aurora Police Department" said Acting Police Chief Paul Nelson.
Groom was among those being considered by corrupt Mayor Tom Weisner to become the new police chief for Aurora to replace Greg Thomas.
There has been an intense battle between the supporters of Groom and the cronies associated with Kristen Ziman on who should be elevated to the top.
In recent years, Groom was the key point person for the APD on three of the most controversial schemes involving by Weisner; building the $163 Aurora Police Palace, bringing Redflex's red light camera scheme into the city and having a "bonus" for a temporary murder-free stat.
Both the police palace and red light camera schemes were associated with corrupt contractors and vendors.
Groom's wife, Kim, is a Sergeant with the Aurora Police Department. His daughter, Katelyn, is currently a police cadet. He also has three sons, Luke, Gabriel and Seth.
In recent months, we've communicated repeatedly with Mr. Groom about the corruption in Aurora and the many controversies involving crony cop Kristen Ziman.
We urge Kristen, if she has any self-respect, to remove herself from any consideration for the position of chief and/or resign from the APD.
And, we urge Tom Weisner to immediately open the search for chief to a national pool of candidates with fresh thinking and reform experience at this critical time in police leadership.
